One pretty big advantage of playing as a Spirit Healer is that it really opens up Anders to do more than healbot. He can be a total beast when you use him for DPS with his tactics set up properly. Something like this by the end of the game:

Self: Health <50% Cancel Vengeance
Self: Health <50% Heal
Self: Health <25% Use Health Poultice
Self: Any Activate Elemental Weapons
Self Any Activate Heroic Aura
Enemy: Target of Hawke: Haste
Self: Health >50% Activate Vengeance
Enemy Rank Elite or Higher: Petrify
Enemy Status Staggered: Chain Lightning
Enemy Status Staggered: Crushing Prison
Enemy Clustered in 3 or more: Tempest
Enemy: Target of Hawke: Stonefist
Enemy Clustered in 2 or more: Chain Lightning
Enemy: Target of Hawke Crushing Prison
Self: Health >50% Martyr

This could be better optimized, but my "use current condition for next tactic" doesn't seem to work properly.... In this setup you're nearly perma-hasted and he uses his damage abilities extremely rapidly with Martyr, and he does 20% more dmg with vengeance activated. (30% if he's your friend.) Overall, I think he's even better than Merrill in most regards for damage, however he is more fragile with the lack of full Magic/Constitution that Merrill can get away with so I recommend keeping Bodyguard on him at all times.

Also bookmarked this for a read later. Healbot/support is the type of tree I gravitate to (and was my first spec on playthrough) so any tips are nice. Thanks for putting time into this writeup. :)

I have to agree, Anders is a wonderful DPS monster when allowed to be, just have to keep his mana up.

I'd agree that probably overall if you take really, really good care of Anders he probably ends up out-DPS-ing Merrill, but strictly gameplay-wise (let's not even talk about the story ) I found him dead more than alive. Merrill on the other hand keeps trucking. I know it's obviously because you can just pump Mag/Con for Merrill, but that extra survivability makes her win in my book. However, in light of that, I'll cook up a build for Anders and add it to the guide in a bit. I don't know if I'll go all-out with listing skill investments for the not-as-used-in-my-book companions (i.e. just link to a tree), but it'll be there.

Also, I'll get my tactics for Aveline, Merrill, and Varric up in the update. And a fix re: suitable health levels...300 is probably impossible to get without stacking +health gear, I wasn't totally aware of it until today.

I don't like double-posting, but I made some edits to the guide. Tactics for Aveline/Varric/Merrill are in, I adjusted the health levels; turns out, with Rune of Valiance that's already +35 health, so 300-350 is a good range to be in. Blood Mage could probably go to 325-375 health, including the spec bonus. Still working on DPS Anders, I need to figure out what to give him besides the Primal tree (if you just try to tactic him with the Elemental tree, he'll either nuke you all the time or never nuke because of friendly fire...both of which are counterproductive.

That being said, for those who are wondering boss battles are easy but just slow going. I pretty much tanked the Arishok (Gravitic Ring + Petrify if I wanted to get un-interrupted shots on him), while Varterral and High Dragon bosses were a matter of tanking for Aveline (I could even off-tank for a couple moments to give Aveline a break), healing, and just auto-attacking away. It's good to have a few potions just in case your tank gets caught with both your Heal and Group Heal on cooldown. High Dragon I spent probably about 4 potions and 10-15 minutes just plinking away...sad, but it worked with minimal effort.

Ezra great guide, thank you for finally doing something for us SH's! Only request is for tactics for others, I really suck at coming up with them on my own. I think there's a lot of potential but not sure I totally get the skip tactics and use current condition for next tactic etc etc

Thanks.  I appreciate all the feedback/thanks/whatevers.  You're also in luck because as I just said in my previous post, I put in some sample Aveline, Varric, and Merrill tactics into the OP (the guide itself is split into two posts, which may be the source of confusion).  If you have any tactics questions or have any other companions you want me to take a stab at setting up tactics, let me know.  I'm not the greatest tactic setter-upper out there, but I do ok.

Hey, thank you for this extremely useful thread.
Could you perhaps update the tactics for the companion? If you got to leveling them that is.
It would be very much appreciated since I have a hard time getting to figure out how some conditions work :(

Honestly, outside of attaching a "Self: Health < 25% ===== Use: Health Potion" to all the characters, I don't really have that much to add.  I can see a couple things extra things that will mostly just maximize efficiency rather than make/break companion builds.  That being said, I'm putting it in now.

I also fixed an egregious error re: Death Hex (didn't have enough prereq points), and being that you need a whopping 5 before getting Death Hex means it's just not terribly worth it.  So if you go with Entropy you will invest at the most 3 points into it.

And, I'm working on an Anders build because Hawke + Merrill + Anders + Varric is a hot combo these days.  It will be fully put in (deserves full inclusion) also when I get everything fixed up.

Ok, kinda unrelated question, but I'm building my Spirit Healer and thought I'd check this out... Healing Aura completely refills my (SH Hawke) health ever 2 or 3 seconds, even when down to just a few health - is this normal?

Secondly, WHY does the Radiance upgrade for HA say it requires level 11 and 4 points in SH, if 4 points in SH are not possible by level 11? Why not have req at lvl 12 when you can actually acquire it? Or am I just missing something completely obvious?

I think Healing Aura will stack on itself when you enter a new area. The more areas you enter with it turned on, the bigger the stack. Its a bug in patch 1.00/1.01

As for your second question... yea. That's odd. Probably an oversight by the devs.

Updated with an Anders build. Tactics forthcoming. Not sure how helpful they'll be for Anders since his tactic behaviour is unbelievably messed up. Until they fix it, that is.

I hate to double post, but I got a major edit in:

-Given the super-awesome tree that is Elemental, it can be a primary offensive tree, so I adjusted that part of the "basic skill set" and made the necessary adjustment in the "secondary skill set" since Primal becomes that too.
-Party members (Varric in particular) required additional adjustments given Brittle-y goodness.
-Equipment/Items have been fleshed out: for the lazy, sample gear sets have been provided.

Awesome guide! Good alternative to taking Anders everywhere (cause really, who wants to do that?)

Edit: ninja'd cause I'm the dumb one... sorry

I've been trying to tinker around with reliably getting Walking Bomb off as safely as possible, and here is, at least, what I have come up with off the top of my head: here. Glyph of Paralysis + Walking Bomb + NUKEEEEEEE is simply the easiest way to get Walking Bomb off safely. It'll also obviously require Aveline to have Elemental Aegis and some Spirit Runes, but it's certainly achievable.

edit: I updated the guide with a couple extra items, adding in extra Aveline skills and stuff to accommodate WB and Firestorm nukings. I'm also trying to come up with a new sub-heading to the guide, but that's neither here nor there.

copy/paste from my Nuke Mage thread

Updated, better version of Walking Bomb tactics:

Anders/PC Hawke

(Spirit Bolt/Spirit Strike, Walking Bomb/Corrosive Walking Bomb/Virulent Walking Bomb, Glyph of Paralysis/Binding)

Enemy: Paralyzed - Walking Bomb
Enemy: Clustered with at least three enemies - Glyph of Paralysis
Enemy: Paralyzed - Use current condition for next tactic
Enemy: Target of Anders - Spirit Bolt
Enemy: Target of Anders - Attack

Sebastian/Varric

(Fatiguing Fog/Impenetrable Fog/Overpowering Fog)

Enemy: Paralyzed - Fatiguing Fog
Enemy: Paralyzed - Use current condition for next tactic
Enemy: Target of Anders - Attack

use as you see fit

Well...color me impressed.  I will stick that into the extras portion, in all it's crazy-colored glory.  With full credit, of course.  Thanks :wizard:

edit: I finally beat the game yesterday.  Was putting it off for awhile but I decided to just finish it.  Elemental/Primal/SH made it a cakewalk.  Two reloads, once because I froze myself with Winter's Grasp (took off 9/10 of my health, then I died while still frozen) and once because Sebastien Punishing Lance'd me while killing Orsino.  Call me crazy, but I think I enjoyed DA2's final battle a lot more than DA:O's...

Of course.

I have to help out the lesser mage spec players somehow!

:kissing:

EDIT: Don't forget a Spirit resist rune/one point Elemental Aegis for your tank (unless it's Fenris cause **** that guy)

Enemy: Disoriented -> Use current condition for next tactic
Enemy: Target of Anders -> Spirit Bolt is now a CCC finisher and more yummy!

Make sure the WB target will detonate. That's the PC's responsibility.

So that new item pack, it gave mages sweet delicious new toys.  Exhibit A: Apostateface.  Basically a mini-Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness for the face.  Basically the Elemental tree got a pretty huge boost from all the DLCs...i.e.

FIre Damage Stacking
Apostateface (+10%)
Dura's Blue Flame (+10%)
Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness (+24%)
Ring of the Ferryman (+24%)
Torch of Falon'Din (+16%)
Pyromancer (+25%)
Elemental Mastery (+25%)
Total: +134%

That, folks, is GROSS.  Heck, with that sort of setup you could invest in the Fireball upgrade and have a good secondary attack.  It basically implies that you may as well take Elemental as your first tree, with all the +% items floating around (better damage than the Primal tree, with the scarcity of +electric% items).  And that probably, the all-unique setup is the way to go in this game.  It's probably rather easy to afford both if you don't spend money in Acts I and II, since outside of the Enchanted Silverite Belt, you're not spending gold at all.

Of course, with the item pack, a good 70% of item drops become pointless and can be used to boost the gold pile a bit more.

And for everyone who isnt a forcemage or want to respec to spirit healer/bloodmage when reaching level 13 gloves that protect against knockback for "free".

Yeah, I realized that after deciding to stop drooling over the Apostateface's juicy stats.  I put it into the guide already, it's a good set of gloves.  The best gear in the game is quickly becoming apparent (well, especially thanks to the DLC).

Basically this new item DLC was the equivalent of the Firepower Pack DLC for ME2: basically made gearing way too easy.
