The High Dragon and that Pride Demon (Hybris I think?) equally. I died a lot on both and they're the only fights where I seriously considered lowering the difficulty level. The High Dragon because of its unavoidable flame attack while I was trying to fight off the waves of baby dragons and the Pride Demon because my companions kept getting caught by its paralyzing spell.

The Rock Wraith seemed impossible at first but after a couple of reloads I figured out that the pillars blocked it's most dangerous attack and it went down fairly easy.

With Xebenbeck, I made my companions run out of the room and the waves of enemies were bombarded with freezing and paralyzing spells as they all tried to swarm through the narrow passageway.

-Brekker, Crow camp, pretty much any fight where you've got 3 or more rogues on you at once.
-Friedrich, I couldn't do it. I just couldn't. I had to go with Athenriel and the smugglers.
-Nexus gauntlet, god, it never ends.
-Any fight with 2 or more Rage Demons at once, since they're pretty much demon rogues.

On Nightmare, I think any fight with two or more assassins are going to be tough. That is, if you're fighting the encounter the way it was meant to be fought, without cheaply pulling away from the area. The Brekker fight took me many tries, with carefully planned cross-class combos to take out each rogue as quickly as possible.

Other than that, I had a really difficult time fighting off the Dalish after A New Path on Nightmare, due to the sheer amount of assassins and archers.

The duel against the Arishok. Nothing else is *nearly* as annoying as that. I've tried a mage and a rogue, and there's really nothing you can do except hide behind pillars until your next attack has cooled down. And evade his assaults. And don't get impaled. And....basically keep away from him unless he's spent his assault. And call your dog. And....

Actually, NOTHING helps to make this fight easier. NOTHING at all! The high dragon takes some patience and healing, but you can whittle it down without getting into serious danger of getting your whole party killed. And the other difficult enemies - kiting works almost everywhere.

But that thrice-damned Arishok... I'd rather face a whole squad, two Saarebas included but with my whole party.

As for that "surprise death" before the fight against Meredith, that was likely that Arcane Horror in the multi-trapped corridor. They always get you unless you get them fast. The two demons in the back courtyard aren't that bad.

Most of the boss type fights I found quite manageable once you get their basic behavior. I hardly ever had to reload there. Most difficult for me (at least it stands out in memory) was probably ser Qerth in act 1 (lair of the guard pretenders). I was still level 6 when I got in there, way too low, and enemies just kept on spawning all over the place. I believe four waves, loads of annoying archers, with two elites at the end when you're already pretty roughed up. Also anytime an arcane horror pops up I hold my breath. These guys just love one-shotting anything in sight, and they won't respect a good tank. It just dies immediately it gets caught in any of their spells, magic resistance or not. Ow now I also remember a fight from the mark of the assassin expansion, where it's called a sky horror I believe. You're stuck in this confined space with one that has a huge health bar, and all the while elites and archers keep on spawning to help it out. Hands down most reloads. Second time around I figured a life ward potion might be useful, but these AoE spells just instakill you again whenever you revive :~(

In my experience, the most difficult boss of the game is probably the Sky Horror from Mark of the Assassin, mostly due to its teleporting, the waves of adds that spawn in the corners that never give you an opportunity to rest, and most of all, the instant-cast Death Cloud it deploys that covers about 60% of the very small arena you fight it in. It's totally worth it for the rewards you end up getting, but it's a pain all the same.

You can take everything in the cache except the book. The Sky Horror only spawns if you take the book.

The Arishok is more annoying than difficult. Once you know how to dodge his attacks its just a matter of chipping away at him, trouble is that takes ages and there's not much room for error. Messing up and getting killed when he only has a tiny bit of health left is really frustrating.

Since I've started playing on nightmare I seem to be having trouble with random fights (and any fight with more than one assassin). In Merrill's quest in act 2 had no trouble with the Varterral but then got owned by the Frost Horror on the way out. Faffed about for ages but in the end I had to load, wait for a level up and change my team (did it first time with the new team).

The Fade has caused me trouble on a number of occasions. Anders dies easy but Hawke still has two squadmates left at that point. Merrill has pwned me in the past but this playthrough I froze her quick and got Isabela to finish her before she had time to defrost. Then I ended up having to retry the fight with Isabela a bunch of times, had to make sure she was frozen or stunned for the whole fight 'cause she could kill Hawke fast.

I've had to reload as DW rogue the most time against the sky horror in MotA but I cannot comment on any legacy fights though I hear they are hard. The sky horror just eats through my team with its AoE but when i focused my best abilities on it I got it down quite alright
The arishock for me was only hard when i had to run around the pillars so that i could drink a health potion

Set their first tactic as Self:Any->Wait, and they won't fight back.

So they just follow the tactics you set for them? Hmm, didn't know that. Maybe that's why Isabela never bothered using twin fang, Hawke must not have counted as an elite enemy. I wouldn't like to cheat at that part anyway, I like to see how tough my companions are.

That one room in the Abandoned Thaig where you fight like 20 demons — a handful of shades, one desire demon, two rage demons, a revenant and an arcane horror — is just insane.

I fight fighting templars to be difficult in general, but the battle with Ser Alrik is especially tough. Part of it's the terrain — there's only a short space to manuever around in — and part of it's due to the goddamn templar rogues.

I eventually gave up on trying to fight Malvernis. I applaud anyone who can beat him on Hard or Nightmare difficulty, because I sure as hell can't.

What sadistic mind came up with that?!?!

This a billion times over. Even now that fight makes me reload.

I think the hardest fight was playing a mage and Fenris turns on you in the Fade, BAM ONE SHOT!

I actually don't think any of the actual fights are hard in any way. Just the RNG gets annoying. Boss fights are never a problem, it's mostly spawns of random mobs.

Oh yes. I've done it, but only on Normal difficulty. On Hard and Nightmare difficulty, I can only get as far as the third phase of the fight, when Corypheus begins electrifying the maze and dropping ice shards at random intervals.

EDIT: I lied! Did it on Hard. ^_^

Man it is hard to recall exactly what fight is what since all the places are the same but for non-boss fights:

1. High Town Mansion - lots of shades and traps
2. Warehouse - lots of traps and assasins.

Traps make everything worse since your idiots won't avoid them and assaasins are just trouble in general.

I don't usually have a problem with boss battles but seriously, MEREDITH WTF?! Her bringing down all those statues on me was unbelievably annoying and also the Orsino battle just seemed like a waste and stupid(with that annoying body separating thing he kept doing)...

The 2nd phase with the skeletons was an absolute ****. Sometimes I literally couldn't heal fast enough. Bloody things. I wish there were more achievements like Grim Reaper though. Something that was genuinely difficult to do.
