How did you beat him?

I've heard of alot of people running away and around or pillarjumping on this boss.

Personally I (rogue) sidestepped (like moved to the side, all classes can do it) his frontal attacks, used specials abilities instantly, or attacked with common attacks othervice. Thus I never moved one meter away from him until phase 2 "whirhwind" attacks, and to do potion after getting penetrated.

Did'nt use more than 3 potions. And had like 13 constitution.

As a Spirit healer Mage, I stayed out of his range with kiting, summoned Muffin (the dog) and pelted him with my staff at range when he would stop chasing her and charge. Wash, rinse repeat...
Used a similar strategy with my warrior, kite him while stamina regenerated, scything him when he charged (usually into a wall) and wash, rinse repeat.
He only pig stuck me a couple times each battle.
Haven't done it with my rogue yet but i suspect he isn't going to duel her. She has one smart mouth on her, and I doubt I am going to build enough respect.
Stranger things have happened though...

Running around for 15 minutes and gradually chipping away at him. Summoned the Dog when I could.
The 1v1 duel is definitely one of the most mind numbing fights ever...especially when you have a party orientated Hawke.

Ran around and spammed spells at him. Petrify is quite useful.

Edit: it's very useful, whereby you have about half a minute to fling as many spells at him as you can without resistance.

But running around certainly can't be very heroic? :P

Not to mention matches might last +30 min for warriors or rogues? -_-

On my first playthrough as a rogue on normal difficulty i gave upp after three tries and did the groupfight instead :P

On the second playthrough as a mage it was really easy though, just to keep away from him and throwing spells.

Lots of running, stealth, poisons, potions, grenades and dogs were used.

You do realise that if Laidlaw sees that the bosses will be one hit kills in DA3? :P

But why didnt you just sidestep his moves in melee and fire 1-2 arrows none-stop? O.o

I've beat him four times: once as a rogue, once as a mage, twice as a two-handed warrior.

It's a hit and run tactic. Hit him, run, hit him, run, summon dog to distract him, hit him, accidentally get impaled, drink potion, run, run, run, fail to stun him, get knocked over, get up, get impaled, run until my potions are useable again, run, hit him, run, use stamina, run, hit him run, hit him, run, Hit him, run, hit him, run, summon dog to distract him, hit him, accidentally get impaled, drink potion, run, run, run, fail to stun him, get knocked over, get up, get impaled, run until my potions are useable again, run, hit him, run, use stamina, run, hit him run, hit him, run, Hit him, run, hit him, run, summon dog to distract him, hit him, accidentally get impaled, drink potion, run, run, run, fail to stun him, get knocked over, get up, get impaled, run until my potions are useable again, run, hit him, run, use stamina, run, hit him run, hit him, run, hit him, run out of stamina potions, have one health potion left, barely kill him before dying.

A liberal sprinkling of swearing in many languages at the tv. And that's the battle.

Am I really the only 1 of all the answered ones that constantly was up in his face? Why all this running? Did'nt you know you could just sidestep his attacks for a free 3-4 sec attacktime, or you simply prefer running? :P

Not ashamed to admit I kited throughout most of the fight. Playing a squishy mage, I just couldn't stand my ground for longer than two seconds without finding myself impaled. I hit him with Winter's Grasp, Crushing Prison, and Gravitic Ring in order to slow him down. If he got himself frozen or stuck, I stood still and lashed out with Cone of Cold, Firestorm, and maybe a Fireball for good measure. In between all the running, running, running of course.

My attempts at sidestepping always ended on being impaled...and one one delightful playthrough, getting transported up to the balcony, so I had to start the effing thing all over again.

But impale is a skill he has on cooldown, and is instant. It has nothing to do with his standard attacks... All his standard attacks has a very straight forward hit area, and if you move like half a meter to the side he misses you. (though the range of these attacks is like 5 meters straight forward, in a cone.)

With the Archer, I used pinning shot and ran over to the other side of map. Could take off about a sixth of his life before he reached me.

With a shield Warrior I could fight him straight up, without evading his attacks.

1.- Summon dog
2.- Run in circles around the pillar like a beheaded chicken.
3.- When he charged I'll cast AOEs around the pillars and keep running.
4.- ????
5.- Profit

Godda admit, this was the most entertaining and adrenaline bringing boss of the game. That people would rather do it "the hard way" of 30 min "fights" (running cowards!!!!) rather puzzles me... :s

Careful control over my AoEs as a 2h warrior so I don't get too close but still get some damage in. His range ninjas sometimes. Sidestepping, as a result, was a method I dropped very early on in the fight. Summoned dog to hold aggro sometimes, as well. Poor thing.

Yup. Basically AoE poking.

Tried that, didn't work. If I ever fired more than one arrow (or stopped to do anything but fire just once), then he would pounce and I would be stuck within his grasp. I couldn't even fire fast enough to use the "archer's lance" thing, because he would advance on me too quickly.

The method above was the only way I could get it to work.

Of course, on my dual-wield playthrough, it was much, MUCH easier.

I switched to Casual. LOL.

I was playing a strictly support!Hawke and I had no firepower. After watching him chug potions like there's no tomorrow, I said "screw it." It was more just annoyance than anything. I could keep kiting and he couldn't kill me either.

Circle strafe at point-blank range and get a couple of hits in every time he swings. After he potns up and starts he whirlwind dance you run away and come back. Pot up when he penetrates. Easy on NM.
