Circle strafe at point-blank range and get a couple of hits in every time he swings. After he potns up and starts he whirlwind dance you run away and come back. Pot up when he penetrates. Easy on NM.

Finally a fellow heroic person! :)

As a Primal/Force spec mage, minoring in Ice/Spirit spells, I found it most effective to use the Ice spells to slow him, the just beat the **** out of him with damage spells, then when he sped up, CoC, and he's a snail, then use Gravitic ring, and he pretty much doesn't move for about 20 seconds. The fight was over in under 2 min

Slowed him with Winters Grasp, unleashed everything I had at him then ran away until winters grasp cooldown came up again. Didn't take too long, actually.

With my two handed warrior I eventually gave up and got the party involved. Though I may have been suffering from the early stages of the Isabela friendship bug there.

I approach that fight usually in two ways:

a) I turn down the difficulty

B) I refuse to duel and just kill every single qunari

Force and elemental mage here. I slow him down with Gravitic Ring and Winter's grasp and unleash FIERY DEATH FROM THE SKY. Also, run.
For the health potion cooldown, better have Elfroot potions(different cooldown timer) and Heal.

Am I really the only 1 of all the answered ones that constantly was up in his face? Why all this running? Did'nt you know you could just sidestep his attacks for a free 3-4 sec attacktime, or you simply prefer running? :P

I played a rogue and I wasn't able to sidestep him..even when I'd move to the side when he'd bum rush me, and I was like half the room away from him I'd get flown into a wall...so yes...I did one heck of a lot of running around pillars until I could chuck a potion at him to stun him. Although she never got impaled.....she often got cornered, with nary a way out.

Never thought of using Dog!

On my Mage while playing on Hard.

Petrify and stay away while hitting him.

Then used the Force Mage Gravity Ring to keep him in place for a while.

While those two attacks were on Cooldown I just ran like hell and summoned the dog as much as possible. Took quite some time as the Arishok had like 3 pots, so I'm guessing around 15 minutes give or take.

Kinda made me miss the Loghain fight. That one on Nightmare was at least relatively quick (1-2 mins) while you could loose if you didn't get in your attacks first.

Activate rogue's inconspicuous ability. It makes the Arishok glitch - he stood still for the better part of the fight. Just slash away.

I beat him the slowest way possible.
Support Mage isn't exactly made for quickly single-handedly killing bosses I suppose...

Really easy fight though, just really long.

As a mage he was whooping my behind. I had to keep running and hitting him from a distance. As a rouge it was a lot easier to stand my ground.

I only managed to do it on normal as a mage with lots of running, the use of dog, and alternating various stun/slow spells with elemental spells. I haven't yet beaten him on my rogue cause he just wiped the floor with me, but I am going to try that next.

I was a mage. And I was lucky in that I really did not need to do any pillar humping.

I used Elemental & Primal magic, and one force spell for kicks. Pretty much, I'd Petrify, cast Tempest, Firestorm, Fireball, Stone Fist, attack attack attack. When the Arishok would get out of his daze, I'd immediately cast Ice / Cone of Cold to slow him down and repeat my previous attack strategy - then add Gravity/Slow once he'd stir. At that point, Petrify would be back and the cycle would continue. Add Lyrium potions and all is good.

Killing ever Qunarii is much more fun, and from what I can tell, there really isn't much differnce in the storyline at this point, because either way, Qunari are gone and you become the Champion and have lots of hot elf sex at your mansion (Especially if you adopt the female elf slave and woo Merrill).

Yeah after taking me ages to smart him in 1v1 and having the labtop freezong shortly after I realized you could refuse the duel and kill all of them which I thought was a better choice...it turned out to be far far easier.

-"We...will...return"
-"And you will die again"

What bugged me is the Qunari that asks you for the Qunari swords in Act 3...I would liked the Templars not let any of them enter into the city ever again.

2h Warrior with Reaver

Pommel strike to stun (didn't always work, but enough) and then slash, slash, slash. Learned his animations and used the blocking skill to block damage from them. When my health fell a bit, I used the Reaver heal ability if I could. Or, I would summon Dog and let ol' Fergus have a go while I manuevered around behind him. Lots of health potions, some stamina and one Renewal potion. I didn't feel like I spent too much time kiting him at any one point in the fight, but I certainly wasn't able to go straight up toe-to-toe with him for long.

Staying away from him until your potion timer expires, that's the best idea. He hits way too hard and has way too many hit points for toe-to-toe.

At first I ran around...then I got impatient and kept hitting him with abilities since Bolster and Second Wind works. Potions are important since I can't use the Devour Ability.

Played as a mage, ran round in circles, and threw a Crushing Prison on him whenever I could. It was epic. truly.

Also, summoned the mabari, because apparently bringing your dog to a duel is okay.

With my mages and rogue I had to attack and run away...rinse and repeat. Almost lost to him on my first mage playthrough because I started laughing so hard because it was taking so long. My warrior just stood there and sliced him apart...never liked playing as a warrior but DA2 has changed my mind.

Mage Hawke only took a few minutes; Rogue Hawke took forever.  Did anyone else notice your teammates do the idle animations during the dual?  Fenris looked as bored as I felt that second play-through.
