Science fiction is the key here, it can defy the laws of sience because it's fiction. Think about it, travelling from the citadel to earth would take centuries at the speed it takes to get to mars today. (30 years)

Almost all science fiction has space travel. Even 2001 and 2010 had it, though it didn't have FTL.

However, ME didn't just defy it. They kind of slapped it out by rezzing Shep from ashes.

It's probably already been mentioned (not reading through all 11 pages), but the mass effect fields that were found from the Protheans (and ultimately the Reapers) apparently have the ability to manipulate the laws of physics, thus throwing Isaac Newton's and Albert Einstein's theories out the window. In other words, their theories still exist in the game, but when the mass effect field technology is involved those said theories are exempt. It can be explained as the technology not being known before we made such theories. In the end, it's just a game.

2001 had FTL. What do you think that psychedelic experience was when Dave Bowman went from Jupiter to that hotel room?

The current scientific perception might say it is impossible. How many times has that changed during human history? Its just theorycrafting. With new levels of understanding, you can push the bar of what is possible.

Nah, the current scientific perception says it is possible.  You can't travel faster than light, yes.  Nobody is saying that you can.

But what if you do something to increase the speed of light?  Bam, you win.  That's how warp drive works (theoretically possible), and it's the explanation behind how mass effect fields permit FTL travel.

i would say almost anything is possible in the real world, whether on earth or some far off planet r in another dimension. i would also say anything is possible in video games too, but that would seem to obvious.

No no no, FTL travel is possible. Its the accelerating to light speed that is Impossible. The theory of relativity states that as you approach the speed of light the amount of energy needed to continue that acceleration becomes infinite as you approach light speed. It would look like an asymptote on a graph. But, and here is the kicker, If you can get to light speed or faster then light speed instantaneously then you can travel using limited amounts of power. now granted the amount of power needed to get beyond light speed instantaneously is beyond our current scientific capabilities. This would allow for FTL travel.

Personally, I would just say we have no idea what's possible.

.....in the same way that the idea is that anything is possible.

Breaking the sound barrier was also impossible.

Landing on the moon was also considered impossible.

Splitting the atom was once considered impossible.

Time and space it is theorized can be.... bent/altered... somehow.

Is going FTL travel probable or likely any time soon? Likely not but anything can happen.

It's not reusable. The entanglement is broken once you observe the particle. If you want to send one more bit of information, you need to send another particle.

In Charles Stross's Eschaton novels, this is how FTL communication is done. People on one end create a ton of entangled pairs, and fly them to a distant colony on normal subliminal ships. After a while, they run out, so another ship comes by.

Huh. I guess my understanding of quantum entagelement isn't what it should be. I tip my hat to you, sir.

Thank you for this amazing and thought-provoking contribution. I'd love to pick your brain, but I think I can hear your CoD clan calling.

30 years? Do you live in the 17th century? It takes like, 9 months to get to Mars. It'll be even shorter when people decide to start using nuclear engines.

30 years... Thank you for making my night!

Current theories does not support faster than light travel as far as I know. You just can't break the time/space. Then again these are just theories, or in other words the wild guesses that are popular at the moment. Remember that once upon a time the popular theory was that the Earth is flat. With a little imagination and simplification we can imagine our theories being bendt into something more practical for galactic travel in the future.

Wait. I know this one. The answer is 3 'o clock, right?
