Not sure how to describe these actions, but I cannot speak to anybody or perform any actions (such as picking up the pistol in the beginning of the game) that you normally perform by walking up to a person/object and pressing Space. The prompt does not appear. I have reinstalled and tried this on multiple saves.

I have played the game flawlessly several times on this machine. I have also noticed that my performance is noticeably worse, and I would expect that to be because of the game not agreeing with the latest ATI Drivers for my card (which may also explain this problem).

Any ideas on how I can solve this?

Strange that this would occur suddenly, but it is absolutely related to poor performance. Too low a frame rate and the interaction reticules go away just like you describe. See if you can bring the frame rate back up.

What are your card and drivers? I have a Radeon 4770 and a Catalyst 11.4 preview and ME2 doesn't seem to have been affected this way.

My computer's pretty awful. ATI Radeon HD 4350. Ran the game pretty smoothly before (with some settings toned down, of course), but when I tried playing again it went to hell. Suppose I was just lucky. If it's a performance thing, I'll just wait 'till I upgrade.

4350 is listed on the box/webpage as being below minimum spec, so yeah, you were indeed lucky.
Try disabling as many in-game shinies as possible and lowering the resolution, as well as rolling your dirvers back to a previous revision and you may have some luck.
