This isn't a character thread. I know that there are separate threads for Garrus and Tali.

My intention is to find out why liking Tali means liking Garrus, and vice versa. What is about them both that puts them both in the same boat? So to speak. They are both very different characters, so why is the 'Team dextro' meme all over BSN?
As a 'Team dextro' supporter myself, I am pretty curious as to why Garrus and Tali are always liked together (or so it seems that way.' Image IPB

I think it's because they both stuck around for ME2 and became LIs.

And yeah, I like Tali, but nowhere near as much as Garrus.

True, I can see the loyalty thing, but their personalities are very different. I think it is because of the same themes they have in their romance scenes perhaps? The nervousness and adorkableness!

Adorkability may be a factor, yes.  Not to mention how much both of them matured between ME1 and 2.

Also, chicken legs.

I don't like one because of the other I like them both because they're compelling characters both are interesting in their own ways and both have interesting flaws. Not to mention both have really nice voices.

Let's see....

Tali in ME was a young 20 year old going on 17-18 who was way in over her head when we met her running for her life trying to make her way out of a bad situation by doing worse. Her life was quickly turning bad then we saved her took her to the ship in a natural believable way.

She had courage and dazzled (me anyway) with her tales of her home. She was so open and tried so hard both on and off ship. She was fearless or at least hid it when on the battlefield. In ME2 she was 24 going on 25 - 29 she grew up became stronger but weaker at the same time you could tell she was troubled but dealing as best as she could. she was Tali but not the naive one we knew she had suffered through the two years and then she became an orphan everything about her just builds and adds to her and I hope BW keeps her natural progression with her life no extreme falling off the bandwagon like Liara did.

For Garrus his voice was to me about 28 but he was strong in his convictions and wanted justice I admired his willingness to hunt down Saren. When I first met him on the Citadel I was impressed the strength of his voice and determination I liked him so much I wanted to date him then!

As I talked to him in game I learned just how far he was willing to go and would cross all stopping points if it meant getting his bad guy. I knew then he could be trouble if not given leadership and boundaries I tried with Dr. Heart and thought we were really making progress with him so he wouldn't stoop to the bad guys own levels when dealing with them but in ME2 he pops up as a vigilante stalker and I was like but Garrus I thought we work through this! Image IPB

So he slid back quickly and hit pretty hard after sheps death so I saved Sidonis from him in 2 hopefully BW won't go and undo all I've done to try and make him both see the line and not step over it when dealing with bad guys I want him to be para not Saren and Garrus walks that line. But it's this big flaw that makes him appealing I know little about his rather dicey family life but what I've learned only makes me closer to him not wanting to shove him away.

Both Tali and Garrus have qualities of real people the issues they have, the way they deal with them seem if you changed their appearance would be very human I can't say the same for others on the crew but these two I can they're very human like their flaws and strengths make them who they are.

The only other characters I can say are this convincing are Ty, Boomer, Starbuck, Guyus, no.6, and Admiral Adama from the new battlestar

I don't think liking one immediately means liking the other. I do think there is a sizable community that happens to like them both, and they have the common trait of being dextro-dna... But if, say, Wrex came back as a squaddie in ME2 instead of Garrus, some other connection would be made for that particular group of fans and it would be called "Team XYZ."

Bottom line for me, and this is arbitrary because of the way the plot worked out, I'm team dextro because I really liked both Tali and Garrus in ME1, and was thrilled to have them both back in ME2. Gotta say, though, that for me some of the ME2 squad ranks up with them, and if they return in ME3 they will achieve some kind of "Team" status with me. (Looking at you, Mordin Legion...)

I like them both - two of my favourite squaddies. But I liked them both separately before I considered them a team.

There are plenty of Garrus fans who don't like Tali and plenty of Tali fans who don't like Garrus. I think the sheer popularity of the two of them is why there has been overlap.

I honestly don't know. I genuinely like them both. Never thought about why that is.

I understand that there are exceptions, but generally I have discovered that if someone likes one, they usually like the other (with the exception of xzxzxz701 :D)

I find that there is often an overlap in fans who like Miranda and Liara. But there is no meme built around it. Or the VS and Liara. Whereas Team Dextro is right across BSN.

As Raidan has pointed out, there were differences between the two in both ME1 and ME2. Tali was an ambitious, yet naive young woman who was trying to make her own way in the world with some dangerous information. Then in ME2, she matured, she toughened up, and developed as a person without doing a 360 in her character (like LIara did, in my opinion.)

Then Garrus, in ME1 he was 'reckless and idealistic.' He was the opposite of your turian stereotype, and wanted to follow his ideals rather than adhere to the laws of C-sec. After tasting life with a spectre, then losing it all. He pined for the freedom from red tape once again, but he decided to do what he could in Omega. His betrayal there only strengthened his conviction for justice.

So as Raidan pointed out, they are both well-developed characters with their flaws. But they are guided by very different principles. Their personalities are still very different. Yet 'Team dextro' is still everywhere.

There will always be people who like one and not the other, but I think there are enough similarities between them that make a lot of people like both. Garrus and Tali are both very loyal, a bit sarcastic, and (for most people) have a history with Shepard because they've been around since the beginning. And as others have mentioned, many people wanted them to be romance options in ME1, like I did. Garrus was always my favorite squadmate, and when I saw Tali's introduction scene, I thought she would be perfect for my first MaleShep. I was more neutral towards Tali in ME1 though. I liked her character, but I thought she needed to show more of her awesome personality. ME2 did that.

So yeah, I'm a fan of Team Dextro. :)

"Team Dextro" reminds Goodwood of that dumb "GO TEAM VENTURE" two-fingered gesture thing that Hank and Dean would do in the cartoon Venture Bros. (which is a lot like Johnny Quest on acid).

Well, I dislike both characters equally in ME2...but for different reasons. So I don't know why the fan bases overlap.

Wouldn't that mean Shepard is Brock Samson?

True that. Also:
Dat voice!
The only characters that realy stays in the story through both games and this is written quite well.
I don't know how they managed to be smoking hot, being a weird dino bird thingy and hidden behind a gas mask, but they both did. This makes them rather unique as LIs.
The only two people Shepard can realy rely on.

So yeah, go team dextro! And they better be in my squad in ME3...

Is that due to the fact that they only have three fingers on each hand? ^_^

And also, I am amazed that they managed to make a dino-bird look sexy too. And also, made a woman look sexy when we can't even see what she looks like .
But as Engineer Donnelly says, that is a rather snug fitting suit!

They're the two I can count on even if the Devil himself comes to start a fight.

If Admiral Hackett called me up and ordered me to storm the gates of hell, I know I could get it done with the help of Team Dextro.

yeah I know but voice sound wise before I knew her real age I figured she was about 20 same for Garrus I think in ME he sounds 28. I'm not one of those need to know ages of my characters rarely do I look such up like Leon Kennedy in RE2 I figured he was 20 - 25 weather that's true is irrelevant to me liking him. For instance I don't actively go searching for default Msheps age looking at him he looks 30 he could be 25 or 35 makes no difference for me.

I love Garrus but I'm not particularly fond of Tali. On the list of all squad members from ME2 and ME1 she would be close to the bottom.
But I guess people like them both because they were both squaddies in ME1 and are familiar?

They do have some common traits, loyalty being the one that stands out the most, but they also have a bit of an ''Just like old times'' feel in ME2, Garrus especially, plus, they're both pretty renegadish. And they're both pretty.

Hehe, Garrus may be slightly perturbed that you perceive him as 'pretty.' :P

However, it does seem that loyalty seems to be the deciding factor. But people may think that Liara is loyal because of ME1 and LotSB. It is different because Shepard is helping Liara as opposed to vice versa. But she does stick to Shepard despite associations to Cerberus.

Oh come on, Garrus is pretty! A blatant Garrusmancer like you have to agree.
And honestly, their personalities are quite alike. It may be that, not just the loyalty.

Both returning characters, both great and both made LIs because of hudge fans' demands. Also their fangroups never had silly feuds against eachother and there's a nice mutual support between them.
