Mass Effect the movie will, in fact, NOT follow the game's story about Saren and the Reapers. Here's the official summary as written by the film's producers:

"Mankind discovers ancient alien technology that enables faster than light travel. Using stored coordinates, mankind stumbles on a hostile alien race know as the Turians."

For those who may be unaware, this is the back-story to Mass Effect (the game) also known as the 'First Contact Wars'. It goes over the discovery of Prothean ruins on Mars, which jumps humanity's technology forward 200 years and allows FTL travel. The first race they come across is the Turians, which sparks a massive war. This happens roughly 50 years before the events with Commander Shepard. Whether or not he/she is even part of the story is up for speculation. By all accounts, he/she wouldn't even be born.

Mark Protosevich is writing the screenplay. He wrote I Am Legend, and worked on Thor, among other films. I am not certain he is the best choice. Avi Arad is a credited producer, who worked on Iron Man, Spider Man 1 & 2, Ghost Rider, and other generic films. Take that as you will.

It should be known that Ray Muzkya is not credited as a producer, and thus there is no oversight by Bioware indicated in this film. EA has taken a producer role, seeing as they hold the rights to the Mass Effect brand, and it's likely that a great deal of source material will be warped to appeal to a wide audience. This includes, but is not limited to, a likely PG-13 rating. Currently the film is still being scripted, so casting and a choice for director is still unknown.

Needless to say I am disappointed. This is nothing more then a weak move to cash in on the title without having to commit to a trilogy of films. Low budget, cheesy actors, cheesy writing and an A-typical Hollywood mentality is exactly what I expect out of this. If they fail to deliver, don't expect any others.

Edit: Not an April Fools Joke. (Also, posted on March 31st)

Hmm the first contact war might make for a good film actully OP.

And where was it ever stated they were aiming for a hollywood blockbuster? Many games gone movie do this.

So they won't butcher ME1's plot? YAY!

But they'll butcher the First Contact War again, throwing the turians into "ebul bad dewds" as if Evolution wasn't enough? GODF*CKINGDAMMIT.

I will only be pleased if they take the "they're actually people like us" route, or at least drop the "herp derp look alien bad guys" bullsh*t.

I know the hearts of many people just sank reading this title, but sadly this is the truth. Mass Effect the movie will, in fact, NOT follow the game's story about Saren and the Reapers. Here's the official summary as written by the film's producers:

Personally, I'm glad they're not making a movie about Shepard/the Reaper Plot. I mean it would be difficult enough to write a good movie what with all of the choices that are offered to the player during the game. Also, I would die a little inside if I saw the ME movie series end up anything like the Resident Evil movies (no offense to anybody who likes them, I just wish they followed the plot of the games more closely)

In regards to the whole low budget thing--I would hope not, but time will tell I suppose.

I was hoping they would do something that was not ME1. Kind of ruin the idea that the plot really depends on choice the character makes.

I was hoping for the first movie to be about the Skyllian Blitz.

Fantastic news! Why be disappointed? If you want the Saren/Reaper story just play ME1. Most fans will be happy about this. (if it's true)

and the over use of cgi...... i mean it works but theres times where you can see it in the film.

id love a opening scene that shows the protheans being destroyed by the reapers and after that cut to 50'000 years later by showing humanity find the prothean ruins on mars

HOORAY! The game is a movie in and of itself, making it into a movie would just suck... It's about YOU! Your decisions, your story. So glad they're making it about the First Contact Wars.

Just you wait.

They're going to portray the turians as utter monster. They'll have them murder the men and boys and have their way with the women and girls.

I'll be pissed.

Was it Mark Protosevich's decision to change the ending of I Am Legend? If so, i hate him and he completely ruined the film.

The original annoucement said that Legendary Pictures have their hand in this movie, I enjoyed some of their movies but they made some stinkers also. I'll reserve judgement for when we know some more.

you can't hear Sovereign's voice? I have a bad feeling these guys will go like "Hm.. we need some badass." and set Sovergin as turian flagship.

OP, I think your heart is the only one that sank. Just saying. Not many people want them to portray things that we can choose in the Mass Effect video games. It will cripple the imagination of the games and may even weaken the franchise.

Saren was a great story for Mass Effect 1. But the Mass Effect movie isn't going to be a bunch of live action cut scenes from ME1. It's going to be an original production that's within the realm of a film production company's limits. They're not going to recycle what they've already done. That would be crap.

Awesome, another good game butchered by Hollywood.
