So the project is not even in pre-production?

Since they decided not to cover the events of the games than maybe Bioware had some say in this production. What I mean is that now the movie could be looked at like the books and comics that expand the ME universe.

I hope this news is true... if so, best news I've heard about the film so far. I could do without a "film version" of Shepard.

You guys realize that IMDB is like Wikipedia, and that anyone can edit it?

This is false.

If I understand correctly, anyone with a Pro account can submit information and can edit pages. If not, my mistake.

Regardless, I'm still treating this as speculation and won't belive anything until there are formal announcements. After all ...

Note: Because this project is categorized as in development, the data is only available onIMDbPro and is subject to change.

Members of IMDBPro can submit errors, which are reviewed, at the most. You cannot freely edit information unless it's your own project and you're the producer. Even the screenplay writer and actors can't change that information. "Subject to change" is also not indicated on the official summary, and is used liberally on a page where changes can be made to a variety of things. The screenplay is in the process of being written as of January this year, so whatever the summary says is what they are working off of.

Well I thought I'd share this:
Film production occurs in five stages:
  • Development—The script is written and drafted into a workable blueprint for a film.
  • Pre-production—Preparations are made for the shoot, in which cast and crew are hired, locations are selected, and sets are built.
  • Production—The raw elements for the finished film are recorded.
  • Post-Production—The film is edited; production sound (dialogue) is concurrently (but separately) edited, music tracks (and songs) are composed, performed and recorded, if a film is sought to have a score; sound effects are designed and recorded; and any other computer-graphic 'visual' effects are digitally added, all sound elements are mixed into "stems" then the stems are mixed then married to picture and the film is fully completed ("locked").
  • Sales and distribution—The film is screened for potential buyers (distributors), is picked up by a distributor and reaches its cinema and/or home media audience.
IMDB lists as in Development

Edit: Grrr, link =]

It's in pre-production which at this stage involves the scripting. Casting will be done after the scripting is done, revisions are made and a director is chosen.

OP, I think your heart is the only one that sank. Just saying. Not many people want them to portray things that we can choose in the Mass Effect video games. It will cripple the imagination of the games and may even weaken the franchise.

Saren was a great story for Mass Effect 1. But the Mass Effect movie isn't going to be a bunch of live action cut scenes from ME1. It's going to be an original production that's within the realm of a film production company's limits. They're not going to recycle what they've already done. That would be crap.

I disagree.

It is very obvious why ME movie was again story-chopped. It's because Hollywood's main consumer base is composed of  bunch of people who don't know if Canada is in NA, and to get any stories through their head plots need to be extremely simplifed, or at least the moive itself must be visually entertaining if you want to have complex plots. (like Matrix, LOTR, Inception)

It is ALSO very obvious that this movie is going to be just another alien invastion crap with no dipiction of diplomacy, humanity, and war strategy. I bet my cookies on Allian-predetor 2 or ... I can't even come up with simular movie names. I hate these sorts.

Regarding Bioware oversight...EA and Bioware are the same company now. I know people don't like to think about it, but the doctors are officially EA executives in charge of the RPG division, which is Bioware. If it says EA is overseeing the project, that means Bioware is overseeing the project.

So they won't butcher ME1's plot? YAY!

But they'll butcher the First Contact War again, throwing the turians into "ebul bad dewds" as if Evolution wasn't enough? GODF*CKINGDAMMIT.

I will only be pleased if they take the "they're actually people like us" route, or at least drop the "herp derp look alien bad guys" bullsh*t.

Was Evolution that bad?  I have always been a supporter of the idea of a FCW movie, but the unknown influence of Evolution worries me even though I have not read that comic series.  I actually think the debate over who was at fault for the FCW may play into your preference for "they're actually people like us" route, especially if the judgement is made that both sides were at fault with humanity being foolish to activate the relay (of course we had not met the Rachni) and that the Turians being over-aggressive in their response.  Of course the problem is that the Turian response would look like "herp derp look alien bad guys" until context is given...at the VERY end of the movie!

False. Bioware still very much acts as an independant entity and can still work with other publishers on other IPs. For example, all of Bioware's Star Wars titles are branded by Lucas Arts. In the case of this film, Bioware's writers have no oversight. Also keep in mind that EA did not own Bioware when they developed Mass Effect 1 and released it on console. EA holds the branding rights for Mass Effect, and thus holds all the keys for film producers. Legendary and Avi Arad went to EA, EA said okay -- BUT with stipulations, as seems apparent.

I'll wait for a formal announcement from BioWare/EA about this before becoming hyped up.
Now, to the issue at hand: the chance that we can see the First Contact War/Relay 314 Incident on-screen is excellent. That way, it doesn't screw up the continuity in the trilogy, since it wouldn't affect how the game can be played. If a video game was created and it could affect the trilogy, that would be bad. A stand-alone game would be a pure shooter, in my opinion, which means BioWare should not pursue it as a game. They're good at RPG's. Let them stick with that.
In regards to the OP's feelings about how they'll treat the Turians in regards to the film: I actually understand his feelings. For the most part, a lot of us who have a dislike of the Turians have it stemming from the fact that their code of honor dictates they need to not only follow bad orders, but also are required to enforce Citadel Council law on those who may not even be aware of the Citadel Council's existence, and therefore ignorant of their laws. I hope the film takes a more serious angle in regards to this, since I want to see the actual ramifications of what happens. For example, Garrus says in ME2 that even if a Turian knows he's following a bad order, he has to follow it. It'd be nice if it showed the conflict in the Turians as they have to deal with this new species in the galaxy.
With the human factor, I think a few people are forgetting Turians are dextro-based life forms. So the whole 'have their way with the women and children' thing is something that, if Hollywood puts it into the film, they actually can get sued for. Unlike Japanese anime and such, the people who actually slave over this stuff live in the U.S., and I highly doubt they're going to let whoever does the film just butcher that. If they do, my respect for BioWare would go down the toilet.
One thing to note: if you research enough, you'll find while three BioWare exec's actually will be listed as executive producers: Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Casey Hudson. This was announced by BioWare on May 24 last year. If you want to believe IMDB, which actually is more editable than Wikipedia, than that's your choice. I want to see the First Contact War, but I'll wait for BioWare to announce it. And pay attention to other announcements regarding that film. In fact, I'm sure they have a thread in the Announcements section dedicated solely to this issue. Don't waste everyone's time posting things that are not verified by BioWare, and your only evidence is from the blasted IMDB. They're useless, and they spread viruses. Don't believe me? I've had to get rid of my old laptop because of them. I trust two sources on the Internet for Mass Effect news besides gaming magazine sites: BioWare itself and IGN, which is given the updates by BioWare. They'll post speculation, but they'll specify that it is. IMDB doesn't have this factor.
Also, another point: IMDB has constantly listed various individuals appearing on shows like Smallville in particular episodes, and they never do. Check your sources, and don't depend on one website. Check at least two different sources. Three's better, but two's good. I have three: Game Informer, BioWare, and IGN.

Very pleased if this is true.

I really want to see the ME universe on film, but reducing Shepard and all his/her appearances/choices/etc. down to one predefined character would spoil it.

However, if this is true, then fantastic. The war with the turians is something that should really lend itself well to film, while allowing plenty of references to future story elements we know and love.

Okay, I'll give you the Game Informer point. But the other two are valid. Why do I say that? IGN has a film division which announced that in May just after BioWare's own press release stating the same information. Don't think that I am attacking you. I'm just saying that I've found IMDB to be very unreliable, and so I find the information in two independent sources before I let myself get too excited. If you can provide a secondary source for this beyond IMDB that's legitimate: i.e., a film magazine or a BioWare/EA announcement, than I'll consider your information legitimate. Other than that, I will not consider it so. I'll consider it speculation.
As I said in my post, I understand your concerns if this turns out to be true. All I'm saying is that it needs more than a single source to be proven accurate. The best source is a statement by BioWare officials. They've made statements regarding the Mass Effect film before, and unless I'm very much mistaken, they've not announced a change in that regard. (the producers).
Anyways, I'm not trying to argue. Just pointing out that one should always be careful. How many times have we seen someone pop up on the forums and post something that hasn't been true? Now, in this case, if it follows like the news about Arrival did, than we'll get an announcement in the next few weeks.
I'm with you in regards to keeping the Turians as a respectable, if somewhat strict, race. They're interesting, at least.

Nothing, not even a god-damned masterpiece of a thousand years would please the majority of the fans if the movie was made about Shepard. Shep's story is an individual adventure which is meant to be played at its very core. Coming from this, when I read this post, in all honesty, I felt all warm and happy inside. Maybe even did a mental fist pump. I don't know.

It's just that the First Contact War would be a perfect way to introduce Mass Effect to the movie audience - since it won't just drop the viewer amidst all the alien mumbo-jumbo and Citadels and Omegas and whatnot. I do get some concerns as to the Reaper story arc being completely ignored, but even if that happens, to hell with it; at least give us a decent movie overall.

so far, I'm liking where this is headed.

I can't think of a single scenario where a Mass Effect movie about Shepard could have turned out well. Solely because it wouldn't be about my Shepard.

So, if it truly is about Shanxi, I'm relieved.

If it's true, his makes total sense. The First Contact War is really the "start" of the Mass Effect universe, and it's the perfect place to drop newbies into said universe.

However, every video game movie ever made has sucked donkey balls. I'm not holding my breath that this one will be any different, especially given the recent retconning, destructive, rule-of-cool influence that Mac Walters has exerted over the intellectual property.
