I was just wondering.  Not really applicable to soldiers since if you're thing is assault rifles you'll get the Revenant.  I was thinking of non-combat classes that choose assault rifle training on the collector ship.  Do any of you that play that way use the Avenger, or do you prefer one of the other rifles?

As a soldier, I actually use it a lot. In fact, I picked the widow sniper rifle on the Collector ship simply because I'm never going to use the Revenant b/c the Avenger looks cooler, the Mattock is more powerful and more accurate and the geth AR is just a more accurate Avenger. Plus, with all the weapon DLCs, there are already tons of ARs, & shotguns to choose from.

BTW, can someone point me in the direction of a user friendly mod for powers? I never use cryo ammo, and I probably never will! Why not trade it in for a different power? Hello! Bioware! Hint hint!

I sometimes use it when I'm on a husk heavy mission and I don't want to worry about aiming for headshots and leg shots (which the Mattlock requires). I remember when I first tried the Revenant, it was just too inaccurate for the range I like to fight at, so I stuck with the Avenger as my soldier's full auto weapon.

If you don't to use the Mattock, there's always the Vindicator as well. There aren't many good reasons for using the Avenger. It makes sense if you like how it looks or sounds, or if you want to use a weak weapon for a sort of challenge. But otherwise you're better off with pretty much anything else.

On insanity squad cryo is good for followers as Shepard uses another ammo power for missions that do not have husks, and it's awesome against husks for insta-kills with the Mattock.

As to weapons as a non-soldier class, I've preferred going with shotgun training and the one time I went with AR training was with a Sentinel. I went with the Mattock that time and I wished I had taken Shotgun training since I didn't have a save I could reload the Disabled Collector Ship.

But as a Soldier I've role-played sticking with the Avenger and later switching to the GPR with Inferno. With the Widow or Claymore.

I use it, yeah it isn't on the same level as the Vindicator or Mattock but I love full-auto.

I sometimes use it on a Soldier until I get the Revenant.
Also: don't hate on Cryo Ammo. It rocks. I use Squad Cryo on the Soldier, the Vanguard and the Infiltrator. For the first 2 I use Inferno Rounds myself and let my Squad have Cryo. And with the Infiltrator I use Cryo on my SMG and Heavy Pistol and Disruptor on the Widow. Cryo Ammo is awesome on Insanity, especially if you use area defense stripping powers like Incineration Blast, Area Drain/Overload or Area Reave first.

I tend to use the M-8 Avenger right up until I get the Revenant if I intend to get the Revenant.

Maybe I'm crazy, but if I'm not using the Mattock and I don't have the Vindicator yet, I would use the Collector AR rather than the Avenger mainly for the fun factor. I haven't really bothered to look up which of the two is most powerful though.

IIRC I didn't even use that AR before all of the DLC. I used Collector AR & Revvy only for a long time.

I use it. Quite a bit. I think it has the best practicality and flexibility, out of all assault rifles.

I used to use the Collector Assault Rifle. Then I realized the Avenger is actually a lot better, esp. after the upgrades.

Otherwise I usually stick with the Mattock and Revvy

Thing is, by the time you get upgrades, you have the Vindicator anyway, and compared to both of them this one is a beast.

^And sadly, the Mattock & Revvy are both to the Vindy, what the Vindy is to the M-8 and CAR. Beasts. : |

Yep. That's why I keep reminding myself that I can beat the game easily enough now, might as well just pick the most fun option :)

Otherwise I could be playing through the whole game just using Mattock + AR. It gets old.

I will try to remind myself to try the Avenger at some point AFTER getting the AR accuracy upgrade. I don't think I've ever done that actually.

The Avenger AR sucks it takes almost a whole clip to kill a normal enemy.

Cryo ammo kicks ass

I hate the Vindicator. I hate all pulse, supresion weapons. It's worse than the battle rifle in Halo.

Also, as I said, the Avenger is the coolest looking.

How does cryo ammo kick ass?

Well, it's awesome against husks for insta-kills with the Mattock even on Insanity.

Here's a thread on the ammo power: http://social.biowar...index/6111921/1

Actually, I've used the Mattock before, and the Revenant very briefly on a friend's PC. My verdict is that the Vindy is leaps and bounds better for me than the other two. In fact, that and the Avenger are my weapons of choice, Assault Rifle wise.

Yes, I was surprised that it is very good AR after using it for a while.

I like the way that the Avenger operates; but its ludicrously underpowered.

Honestly I think its probably the weakest gun in the entire game. On lower difficulty levels it works alright; but if you play on Hardcore or Insanity its a pop gun.

Seriously the thing takes an entire clip to bring down one Husk.

 Depends on the circumstances.

If I am becoming incredibly irate by the Revenant's fail accuracy, I switch to the Mattock or the Geth Pulse Rifle.

Otherwise, I stick with the Revenant.

In my first playthroughs, I was mostly using the avenger, because I felt more secure with more rounds, but when I found out husks can be killed with biotics like pull or slam (EDIT taking them off their feet kills them instantly), and how precise and deadly the vindicator can be, I got rid of the avenger. I'm not playing on insanity though, so this may be different, but I was damn happy with the vindicator as a sentinel, seldom had ammunitions issues, what a kick in the quad when I played as infiltrator again, always having to scavenge battlefields for clips...

Nope, the CAR easily takes the cake IMO. ARush basically has no effect on it. With the recoil and damage upgrades, the M-8 should easily outperform the CAR by late game. Posted Image

I love the Revvy vs. boss fights. Does less damage than the Mattock, but way way easier on the fingers / chi expenditure.   <-- Sometimes we gotta take care of our spiritual energy as well!

Also, accuracy isn't an issue when gargantuan hit boxes are involved Posted Image
