Lol. Shepard's a g*ddamn monster. But it depends on the Snake. Solid Snake would last a few solid minutes against Shepard, utilizing great gunplay, speed, and stealth to his advantage. Ultimately though, Solid isn't anywhere near good enough to take out Shepard. Naked Snake however would have a 55% chance of beating Shepard. Not great odds, but still respectable for both combatants.

As for which are better games...hell, that's kinda weird. I am NOT of the opinion that MGS1 was the best game ever created. Or MGS2 (which I kinda hated). Or MGS4 (which was good, but waaay too melodramatic). That being said, Metal Gear Solid 3, followed by Peace Walker (and to a lesser extent Portable Ops) are three masterful titles, that epitomize the power of storytelling, voice acting, music, visuals, boss fights (especially), and character development in gaming.

For me it goes like this:

1. MGS3 (+ MGS3 series)
2. KoTOR (+ II for it's unsurpassed writing)
3. GTA IV (+ DLC)
4. ME (series)
5. Half Life 2

...as the best games ever created, and some of the only games that anyone outside the realm of gaming should judge our beloved medium in.

also MGS3 was the best of series..MGS2 sucked..

I could never get into the MGS series...way to convoluted for people barely going into the game.

I started with 2 so thatmight be the problem but still I couldnt figure out what the heck was going on...I'm fighting ocelot which is my brother which should have died in 1 but then there are patriots who are dead yet not really dead and control the world........yeah

I don't know! They're both great in their own ways I mean Shep would bring the loudest, biggest guns, but he'd have to find Snake first! Snake is uber great at stealth, sneaking, and silent kills he could kill shep w/o him ever hearing him do it. Both are have determination and mental fortitude so each could wait the other out I don't know! I say they're tied.

 ME and MGS are my two favs, and even though Shepard has futuristic supernatural abilities, I think Snake would simply out smart and manipulate Shepards end.  but it wouldn't be easy though.  face to face, Snake would have the better Gun skills, but what use are they if you're the subject of a biotic experiment.  so basically Snake would definitely have to utilize his Sneaking.  but cmon guys.... snake has destroyed like five different gigantic metal colossi, AND a few dozen helicopters with his bare hands, no powers.  so tell me who's king here. http://social.biowar.../1211007/131795

Solid Snake uses convoluted story elements and Japanese porn mags to confuse Shepard, he then uses this time to sneak behind Shepard and incapacitate him by cutting off his arm, Shepard then uses snake's own convoluted story elements against him, by sowing the arm of snake's brother and clone, liquid snake, on to himself, thus beginning the insurrection of Liquid Shepard!!
This lays rest to the confusion as to why the two were even fighting in the first place, and the two are reassured in the fact that the other is irredeemably evil and wrong. The two explode in a fury of hand to hand combat, the fight is broken by otacon who tries to shed some light on the situation by explaining some meaningless plot points, Shepard gets confused all over again, he then in anger spills snake's glass of water, and then this happens.

@ Hellbound555, oh so maybe you haven't played MGS. snake "IS" invisible my friend. but he can't manipulate the Laws of Physics.
