Not only does she turn on Hawke in the Fade... she "kills" him, my super beefy sword and board warrior, in one bloody hit. How in the hell did she manage that one? *eye twitch*

Semi-related question: do your companions always turn on you in the Fade? I've had companions at full frienship, full rivalry, and somewhere in the middle all turn on me. Is there anything that prevents them from turning? Or is it "destined"?

Funny, I tend to one-shot any of the companions I take into the Fade.

Near as I can tell, there's an order to who betrays you. If you bring Varric, Merrill and Isabela, Varric will be the loyal one. If you swap out Merrill or Isabela for Anders, or Aveline, then Varric will betray you. I think the only one who won't betray you is Anders, but he isn't Anders when you go into the Fade, he's Justice, so I'm not quite certain that counts.

Justice will never betray you, but only because he despises demons and won't listen to them.
The lesson is: Everybody in the world is a scumbag.

Actually I think if you deal with torpor and let him have feynriel justice turns on you. Planning to give it a go next time round playing a complete bastard power hungry blood mage (even gonna give fenris to danarius muahahahaha)

They turn on specific demons. Then there is also a order in which that happens.

Pride Demon
1st Merrill
2nd Fenris
3rd Varric

Desire Demon
1st Isabela
2nd Aveline

Justice only turns on you if you choose to aid the demon at the start.

Edited to add.

Hardest of any of them was just when I was a mage and fighting Fenris. He kept punting me around. I also mistakeningly had him all spell resist talented. Now I don't do that.

They usually turn on you - I haven't figured out quite the logic. On my last playtrhough, Fenris DIDN'T turn on me - I had rivalry almost maxed with him plus my lady-hawke was romancing him. Perhaps the romance bit kept him in line - the desire demon didn't even try to turn anyone. (I had Fenris, Merrill and Varric with me)

The pride demon turned Merrill - I think there's probably no way to stop Merrill from turning on you. Never had a problem killing the turned companion very quickly though. It's probably because I've played a mage and a dual wielding assassin rogue, one of which was able to freeze or otherwise disable the companions quickly, and the asassin rogue.... well... one click of the "assasinate" tallent is all you need.

Dude, my first playthrough was as a Mage. When Fenris turned on me he one-shotted my mage with a Whirlwind attack.

I was like, "What? Fenris don't!" And then I was dead before I could cast a spell.

It sucked but at the same time I had to admit I built him rather well.

My s&s warrior turned Merril into mincemeat very easily...
I'm not sure what she did to you. Anyway protip : pommel strike (and anything that stuns, knockdowns, whatever) interrupts spellcasting. And using a combination of runes and elemental aegis you can easily be immune to most or even all elemental damage types.

I didn't even get the chance to engage Merrill in battle. Whatever she used, she used the second the fight started, and Hawke was KOed :crying:

Merill can last a bit if they've spec'd her with all the 25% damage reduction and the shielding. That on top of her stuff in her specialization. She isn't hard to me. But she can last a while for someone not prepared for it.

@ Sab,

Did you spec her with CC's like Petrify, Horror or Sleep?

Same, and I regretted it. I was a rogue, had brought along Anders and Varric as well. It wasn't just Hawke that went down, everyone died.

I easily solved that fight by instead of trying to slash him down in seconds (almost happened), I scattered. That Merrill incident must've been unfortunate since it seems way more ridiculous.

SPOILER for BG2, Oblivion: I actually thought that the first encounter was a scripted death (like e.g. confronting Irenicus alone, punching Sheogorath) after Merril and/or the pride demon killed my party in about 0.3s

Built properly, Merrill is a beast, possibly the most powerful of your companions.

The 3 you took were all Pride Demon vulnerable. Merrill is first to be picked so Fenris and Varric will not turn. If you took some one other than merrill then Fenris would have turned. Varric is last to be picked of the 3. They only listen to the pride demon. Just like Isabela and Aveline only listen to the desire demon.

I know, when he turned on me, Varric was dead less than one second later

yea Fenris is the only character across 3 games that actually managed to burn through all her health and the regen aura I had up on my Spirit Healer slamming her happy ass into the stones in one hit. I reloaded and brought Merrill who needed some leveling since I hadn't been using her and just did the scene then once the quest was over breathed a huge sigh of relief.
My most humiliating death yet.
The last game i played (Warrior) I brought Merrill, Aveline and Anders (since Anders won't turn and I wont' deal with Torpor) and took on the pride demon first.  Then when Anders and I were left with the desire demon, Aveline didn't last long against my beast of a DPS warrior and the desire demon is a lover, not a fighter.

In my playthrough only Isabela turned on me...I didn't realize when she died though, Aveline and Anders curbstomped her before I paid attention to anything else than the desire demon...was dissapointing.

If I could say something to Isabela I wouldn't patronize her about the betrayal (which was quite expected actually) but I would say something about how much she sucked in the battle...

"You and I gotta talk young lady"

"I know I betrayed you Hawke but..."

"Zip it, I'm not here for that, why didn't you dissapeared backstabbedd and dissapeared again as I showed you to do everytime? Quick forgetting our lessons are we?" *angry face*

I'll have to try that combo next time.  I have seen everyone except Anders turn and it was Isabella over Aveline one playthrough.
And Isabella likes it when Hawke plays rough, as a friend or a rival Posted Image

Anders/Justice turn very quickly. Just agree to work with Torpor. Granted Anders wasn't awake for it or whatever. He is not pleased and neither is Justice when you talk to him after.

That's more you betraying Justice than Justice betraying you.
At least, he takes it that way. Accepting a demon's deal to possess an innocent boy, very naughty.

If you end up not doing it you can later explain this to Anders, who accepts it and tells you that Justice has no concept of tricking or lying to demons because he only understands that they're evil and must be destroyed.

Really? That's interesting. And by that I mean, hey, little details that I want more of in this game! Need to try this out now.

Merril is the only mage who can actually take a lot of hits from mobs if built right all she did to me was mind blast me away but I recovered and used silence and clense then killed her I was a warrior though.
