I have recently purchased mass effect 1 for PC and have found that the fps drops from 40 down to 9 or even 3 on occassions.I have consulted EA and still have this problem.I also have this problem with dragon age origins but my other games are playable are there any suggestions to help me? 
my system is
amd athlon 64 (2712 mhz) dual proc
asus motherboard
2gb ddr2 ram
nvidia geforce 9400gt
realtek hd audio

vista (service 2)

Try lowering visual settings and your resolution. You have a pretty weak budget card which is only just borderline on the  minimum (It's comparable to the 8500 just a tiny bit better and the 8500 is below the minimum requirements)  There are many cheap cards out there which are way better than that one and an investment may be worth your while. A very cheap card great for playing Mass Effect is the Radeon 5670 or if you want to stick with GeForce cards there are plenty of options there too.
