It's better than having to fight waves and waves of Templars with super resilient boss that's completely indistinguishable from any other boss. Apart from armor.

And the idol didn't come just out of nowhere. It was a suitable explanation for Meredith's increased paranoia and harsher treatment of the mages over the years.

This. I like to believe Varric weaves such a damned good tale she ceases caring if it's a little over-the-top. The essentials (Hawke's role) are already laid out by that point.
