I thought we could start a little game of how do you know you're playing a Bioware Game?

In the party somewhere there is a borderline sociopathic racist non-biological entity

Seriously who's the guy that codes guys like HK-47 and Shale, I wanna buy him or her a beer.

Next.

There's humor to be found even in the darkest of situations.

I usually look for the BioWare logo. Has worked every time for me, so far.

Is that really a unique sign for a BioWare game?

I routinely check my game boxes to see if they have the Bioware logo on them to see if that's why they are so good.

It's true it's not really a unique sign for a Bioware game, but if it's an RPG and entertaining, odds are Bioware are involved, if it came in the last 10 years.

I'd know if it's a Bioware game. I tend to keep my ears and eyes open for any potential good games surfacing from development, and Bioware products are obviously keenly noted.

When you get attached to the NPCs in the game, so that once you've finished the game you miss them, just a little. Bioware do that better than anyone else.

Haven't played a crap game from Bioware yet, if the storyline has greater potential than "oo naughty bad guys make bad things happen me kill dem and save da world with explosions" then i'm probably playing a bioware game.

When you actually become attached to pixels and you can't wait to get home to banter with your NPC's.

You begin your adventure having been hand picked for a special training by a mentor. After a few hours the game's linear starting area will be destroyed or otherwise ravaged by something. You will then have to trek to various areas on the map in search of several MacGuffins. On your way you will collect a small following of social misfits who drop everything and follow you because they like adventuring so much, you will probably sleep with one or more of them. Once you have the MacGuffins something you weren't supposed to expect will be revealed, and then you must confront the big bad. Afterwards there will be some kind of reward ceremony.

There´s always at least one goody-goody two-shoes person who will constantly give you unsolicited advice about the "greater good", and it starts to get on your nerves, oh, say, two minutes into the game. Surefire Bioware sign.

Rofl. Pretty much hit the nail on the head.

I'm one or two hours into DA:O now, and though I have hopes of being pleasantly surprised it seems that I'm more or less exploring familiar Biowarian territory. Also, as of now, Duncan has Obi-Wan stamped all over him.

Same cake different flavour. But that's not a bad thing. BioWare's format is actually a very good one for constructing a game with, not that I'm above mocking it.

I preferred their approach with Baldur's Gate. The PC leaves Candlekeep and no immediate harm befalls it. Late in the game Charname returns, speaks with old friends and waxes nostalgic about good times long past. Eventually Charname uproots a hidden evil insdiously worming its way through Candlekeep; and although he/she gets thrown in a cell and falsely accused of comitting murder, it doesn't change the fact they save the day.

I wish BioWare would return to this approach in a future game. It was a nice reminder of how far my character progressed, both from a gaming mechanics and role-playing perspective. Some of the NPC commentary just felt nice after all those adventures. I particularly enjoyed joking with Hull about all the rusty kobold swords I found. (It was a fond reminder of my character's first major adventure exploring Nashkel's mines.) I'll take a homecoming over my character lamenting the loss of their scorched hometown anyday.

Not that I'll stop buying BioWare games if they continue with the current formula. :P
