Wouldn't it have been great to start in Lothering?

This was initially posted on the general board but I've moved it over to here as it is more relevant.

Does anyone else think the game opening would have been infinitely better if we would have started in Lothering with our family? It could have been a slow start where you actually got to know your family members before one of them was killed, similar to the Origins stories. I thought it was poor how the player was just thrown into the whole 'escape the Blight' thing with no context...

We could have explored the village, getting a lot of nostalgia from Origins. We could meet Leliana or get a better insight into the Sten backstory, which could have even built on the Quanari storyline for Act 2. We could do some favours for your family members or members of the village in order to get some money early on, which could make the 50g for the Deep Roads easier early on. Also, the side quests could change depending on which Lothering side quests were completed in DAO, and the resulting actions (such as that merchant or the guy outside the Chantry).

We could even have gotten a glimpse of the Hero of Fereldan, walking off into the distance with a dog, a witch and a Grey Warden...

EDIT: I understand that this may not concur with all of the Hawke back-story such as them being in the army at Ostagar, but that lore is not explored beyond the Codex entry so doesn't really need to be necessary. Also, starting at Ostagar could still be possible.

Like what was mentioned over there, since Varric was telling it... it would've been unusual. Then there's what's also mentioned that it simply shouldn't be done if that was the case. But I somewhat liked what they were trying to do with it so it's... blaghhhh.

But generally, yes. I would've loved that. If it even went so far as being in that mess of a fight in Ostagar I'd have been in love.

I'm sure that would be nice, huh? So what would you cut out of the game to put it in?

Varric's immersion breaking and plot spoiling framing.

Your lies will not be missed, dwarf.

Probably exactly why it was sarcastic. Posted Image 'You have to ask?'

Oh god yes, I really dislike stories told this way
but hey, they wanted the COD crowd

It would have been logical to start in Lothering, but I guess creating a new not fully recycled area would have been too much to ask for.
I can totally see a Lothering DLC, something that should have been in the game to begin with, EA loves those.

Damn good idea, had zero empathy for the family or investment in my hawke all game long because I was shown nothing of him or his background compared to the character shaping experienced in the origins.

I didn't know much about DA2 before it was released, but I did read that it would start in Lothering. So, boy was I disappointed - not Lothering, but a random desolate wilderness I was told was NEAR Lothering. Ugh.

I thought that starting in familiar Lothering would have been a neat way to tie me to the characters. I wish Bioware had just not said anything about Lothering prior to release, so I would not have been disappointed.

Yeah. What if Hawke where the one who discovered Stens family slaughter? That could have been great, and a cool way to introduce the qunari race in DA2.

And meeting Leliana in the cloister in Lothering and then later in the game as Nightingale would have been a nice touch. A "what a small world we live in" moment.

Seeing what the Hawke family lost in lothering, and what life they lived would also have added depht to the characters.

But I guess those things would take too much effort to create.

Why should Hawke even be from Lothering? It is not used for anything meaningfull in the game. All it does is underline the wasted potential.

This is true. In fact, the opening scenes could've been Ostagar.
Take part in the battle until Cailan is slain and you have to book it. Mage Hawke/Bethany could be explained by Duncan secretly hiring apostates to fight the Darkspawn because the Chantry was being so stingy with circle mages.

This also means we could've seen Duncan's beard!

I'm suddenly bitter at how there is no Duncan cameo.

Having Hawke's and Duncan's beards on screen simultaneously would have caused a tear in the fabric of reality.

I agree it would have been nice to see Lothering again. Both Bethany and Aveline mention Leliana if talked to in the Chantry, but that's about it.

Fun fact, Nicholas Boulton voiced both Ser Bryant, leader of Lothering's templars and the helpful refugee outside the tavern.

The wilderness outside Lothering in the first level doesn't really look like Ferelden, it doesn't really look like anything. It took me a minute to realize the weird black spiky thing in the distance was the Imperial Highway.

Nice retcon in Tevinter design, from elegant ancient greco roman to EVIL.
After all, the fact that they're demented mass murdering slaving puppy eating baby kicking villians isn't enough.

I thought we had established this already - it takes the darkspawn so long to march to Denerim, because on their way, they terraform every inch of conquered land into mordor. :|

Except Ostagar.
I guess they were too busy crucifying Cailan for no reason.

Speaking as someone who talked to Cailan, I can see plenty of reason for that :|

Not showing Gwaren outside that cutscene is the real crime here.

Having the darkspawn (including the Ogre) look completely different in the same Ostagar battle would also cause the tear. The game should have started like Heavy Rain where you wake up in Lothering and pour yourself some juice.
