Wouldn't it have been great to start in Lothering?

Speaking as someone who talked to Cailan, I can see plenty of reason for that :|

Whaaaaaaat?!? Cailan was awesome. You're fired.

The Cailan that basically went "Sure, I'll hang Howe, and get you your castle back, but for tonight, join that super secret order of psychos who blackmailed you into coming, and give up all status in the world, I'm really happy for you?"

That Cailan? {smilie}

More like "Oh man that totally sucks what happened to your folks, we'll totally get that Howe dude later on. You're hanging out with Duncan? Is he cool or what!? Dude, you get to join the Wardens? I'm SOOOOO jealous! You like swords? I like swords."

Would be nice if there was a part before fleeing from Lothering. The game would start in Lothering (so you can get to know the entire family), then depending on class diffrent things would happen.

- Warrior/rogue Hawke Would quickly start in Lothering, then move to Ostagar with Carver to fight in the army. Potential Loghain, Calian, Duncan, Alistair cameos.

- Mage Hawke would stay behind with Bethany, doing something (not sure what! :pinched:). Leliana and Sten cameos would be awesome.

If it were like that, then the game would have you to get to know the sibling that is going to get killed in the escape. Instead of the current version that did not really sit well with most people.

Really it's the most horrible thing in all of Dragon Age for me, I sometimes want to slap the writers for making me think about it..

I agree. It's a real shame there were no broodmothers in DA2. In fact, the more disguisting aspects of the darkspawn seemed to be absent entirely, the Deep Roads didn't even have any meat on the walls! Absurd!

I couldn't agree with you more on this. I think that it would have been great if we could have at least fought a broodmother at least once when we went back into the deep roads. I for one thought those were a great fight.

I just want to start a game by killing a few rats in a basement.

This too.

That's the main problem why this isn't in the game. Rogue Hawke apostate hawke and warrior hawke all have different backgrounds of what they were doing, before they ran away.

But that lore doesn't affect the game in any way other than a small codex entry and so it doesn't matter if that had to be changed.

Sure it could be changed, just wouldn't make sense if they did

I'm talking before the game came out. I'd rather they changed two lines on a codex entry in order to make a better game.

Yeah, just a few lines with Aveline and Hawke/Carver IIRC.

Of course hearing Aveline call Carver a ****** might be worth it to some.

This was initially posted on the general board but I've moved it over to here as it is more relevant.

Does anyone else think the game opening would have been infinitely better if we would have started in Lothering with our family? It could have been a slow start where you actually got to know your family members before one of them was killed, similar to the Origins stories. I thought it was poor how the player was just thrown into the whole 'escape the Blight' thing with no context...

We could have explored the village, getting a lot of nostalgia from Origins. We could meet Leliana or get a better insight into the Sten backstory, which could have even built on the Quanari storyline for Act 2. We could do some favours for your family members or members of the village in order to get some money early on, which could make the 50g for the Deep Roads easier early on. Also, the side quests could change depending on which Lothering side quests were completed in DAO, and the resulting actions (such as that merchant or the guy outside the Chantry).

We could even have gotten a glimpse of the Hero of Fereldan, walking off into the distance with a dog, a witch and a Grey Warden...

EDIT: I understand that this may not concur with all of the Hawke back-story such as them being in the army at Ostagar, but that lore is not explored beyond the Codex entry so doesn't really need to be necessary. Also, starting at Ostagar could still be possible.

I think this would be nice.  It might be a little complicated, working in you returning with Carver from Ostagar (or Carver returning alone, if you're a mage), but I think it would be nice.

I think it's less of a missed opportunity than quests during your year of indentured servitude as a smuggler or mercenary in Kirkwall, though.  I like to imagine that the two plotlines could have been in direct opposition, because the mercenaries would be hired by a noble trying to take down a certain set of smugglers that the corrupt guard doesn't care about (but for his/her own selfish reasons, because the smuggling infringes on his/her business).  That way you enable the chance to play two different "origins" of Hawke's time in Kirkwall, maintaining the moral greyness and all that.
