Having recently bought Mass Effect 1 on Steam, I am having troubles installing the free DLC, believing that the installer is looking for the retail version.
How do I install Bring Down the Sky on Steam?

The first BDTS installer did not support Steam. A new one was later released that did.
Where did you get the installer from? If it was anywhere but Bioware's own website (see Kepha's thread near the top for a link) I can't vouch for it being the newer one.
