IMO, if they got rid of Sebastian, changed the plot a little bit (maybe make Cullen the templar commaner and say that his experiences in Fereldan scarred him for life), made Meredith a little younger  (therefore more attractive) and a romance option, that wouldve been great. Plus, having a templar party member would add to the mage vs templar tension.

I think we can all agree that Sebastian is made of fail when it all comes down to it. Why use him when you can use Varric? Plus, it's very easy to end up losing him during the events in the end of the game given what happens when you make a certain decision. I watched his romance videos on youtube and him Hawke don't even kiss/sleep together. How lame is that?

On the other hand, the writers could have expounded on Meredith's interesting back story, developed the character and perhaps greater add to the party member dynamic.

Ok, I stopped agreeing with you there. ^_^

Thrask or Cullen would have made more sense to fill that role, I think.

The "look Templars have a job to do, sometimes it gets unpleasant - and Meredith indeed goes too far - but stop and seriously think about the alternatives for a moment" position.

Why does Meredith have to be a romance option or younger? I quite like her the way she is. Sebastian isn't that bad, he just happens to have the same abilities. He's an archer. It's not like there's any other fighting style he could do. But yes, I would've liked to have Meredith in my party.

What did Sebastian really add to the game? Hell, the only characters necessary for the plot to continue were Varric, Aveline an Anders

You mean you want even more complete psycho's in your party, next to Merril, Fenris, Anders?

If those all combined powers, they could blow up the entire Dragon Age Universe before you did all the boring stuff in Act 1.

Thrask? He is too kind and too much of a mage supporter. Cullen? I agree that he'd make a fine addition. I simply prefer Meredith because I think her character has more potential. She could be the antithesis of Anders and the game could always turn out differently depending on what decisions you make.

Anders doesn't need to be contrasted with more crazy he needs to be contrasted with someone who reasonably and thoughtfully arrives at the opposite conclusion. Which would highlight how crazy and dangerous Anders is.

The other options for straight males are pretty lame, IMO. Most reviewers agree. With a little effort, maybe this also wouldn't apply if there were another female character.

Isn't "secretly psychotic/disturbed/anti-norm" a requirement for being a party member?

I think it is an excellent suggestion. She is a strong willed woman , as templars are and it will have really made more interesting to have a blood mage merril, spirited mage as anders and a strong willed templar like meredith.

I was kinda disappointed when there was no templar party member considering the theme in the game. It would have been good to have an ex-templar who was disillusioned with the order (like Thrask) but still believed in the mission(i.e. protecting people from mages). I always kind of thought the circle was a necessary evil in DA:O but the Kirkwall circle and templars are so terrible that it's hard to see it that way. It would have been nice to have someone to say, "Hey, Meredith may be a psychopath and her sycophants are downright evil but don't paint all templars with the same brush."

You mentioned The Adorable One, The Broody One and The Walking Nuke, I only see one "psycho"...?

Meredith wouldn't really have any purpose if she wasn't the head Templar; They would have to have included a lot of different background information. I probably wouldn't have wanted her in my party, but as a replacement for Sebastian, it'd be tempting.

You disagree that they're lame, or you disagree that most reviewers agre that they're lame? I disagree with both. If you disagree with both as well, the you agree with me. And when you and I agree, righteousness surely follows?

Forsakenshorts are infallible. FACT.

[EDIT] I might be a little tipsy. I'll probably start crying soon. Just ignore me.

They could toss in Pamela Anderson as a LI for straight males and someone would still complain.

Fellow Californian?

Anyways Cullen of Meredith would've made great companions. Meredith had her reasons for being so harsh towards mages and would've been a very interesting companion before losing her marbles.
