Is it even possible to win the game with Aesgareth or does the game cheat?

No matter how many times I try, I always either pick "Plague" or "Strife" and can never win the Spectral Blade or Wish scroll.

Is there some trick I'm missing?

Yes i think it was... tho u have to reload or use a walkthrough to choose the right options.

Does he drop them in loot?

Now, he just drops the Deck of Many Things.

Hmm.
That's annoying - havent played TOB in a while - ITS SO HARD for me - mainle cos im a bit of an amateur D&D E2 player.

I read some hits from google and it suggests that you can win the first two rounds - but it will take some reloading to in both of them - dont play for the gem then.

SPOILER:

Play for the gem in the third round and i think you get the scepter anyway and you can still fight him for the deck.

It IS possible to win both the blade and the scroll. You just need luck and a lot of patience when you reload.
Keep in mind that if you win both, you can't win the gem third round (I always refuse to give him the item because I want to fight him for his loot, I also don't want any powerful demons to meet me and live). You can win the gem in the second round, but then you won't get the third item.

I only went for the Spectral Brand and the Gem. Won both... the first draw is the toughest to win. I lost it maybe 20-25 times before I won.

The second draw was an easier win, but then he's like "Well... I hate being a poor sport, but I can't let you just walk off with the only exit to this labyrinth," then promptly attacks... which I was unprepared for the first time.
