Despite mageHawke (possibly bloodmageHawke, and possibly with Merrill and Anders) using his/her magical talent to help Cullen defeat Wilmod and the other demons, abominations, etc, he still has no idea that Hawke is a mage. He behaves the whole time as though s/he is just ordinary, and I think continues until Hawke becomes Champion (or at least until Act 2). He's really unobservant. It's funny and annoying at the same time.

So I wonder, has anyone else come across similar 'WTF, this makes no sense' moments?

He ignores you being a mage. You were helping him root out and kill blood mages. That puts you low on his list of problems.

I don't think he was ignoring it, although I guess you could assume it was that. Later, if you talk to him in the Gallows and pick a pro-mage comment, he'll say something like "mages aren't people like you and me".

Cullen is an excellent Templar - when you get the choice to kill or spare the three mages who surrender during the end sequence (Templar sided Hawke) he argues that if they turn blood mage after it is HIS responsibility, which he will take upon himself, because that is what being a Templar means.

I had that same quote from him on this playthrough and I actually yelled at the screen..."Yes Cullen, I'm a mage! See the friggin 6 ft STAFF on my back? Remember me casting spells? I think My buddy here, Anders, actually used a heal spell on you. So WHAT do you want to say about mages not being people????"

In some ways the game would make more sense if the PC couldn't be a mage.

Yes, I agree, Cullen's been a bad, bad Templar. Come back Leggy! We need you ;-)

I think Cullen must be related to Alistair, the so-called ex-templar who asked the woman wearing Circle robes and carrying a staff if she was a mage. And also asked my dwarf the same thing, for reasons unknown. The lyrium must be mushing their brains. Image IPB

That made my evening. LOL.

On topic:
Cullen knows that Hawke is a mage. At one point he says something like: "You are probably the only mage who can speak directly with Meredith." I think this line comes up in act 3.
And I asume he doesn't mention Hawkes magical ability earlier, because Hawke isn't a show-off and holds his tongue, so maybe Cullen didn't realize it at first. If so, Cullen isn't more naive than the rest of Kirkwall. I mean citizens are standing by and watch Hawke performe magic all the time. In addition, Hawke never uses magic in front of Cullen until later in the game. And about the staff: I like to pretend that it's not visible somehow, but that's just me.

Meredith knows you are mage. She lets you go free, for now, because you are helping the cause. It would be a terrible thing to get rid of the only person helping Kirkwall.

I really wanted my mage to be like the guy in the trailer, an arcane warrior / blood mage mix, who only restorts to obvious spell casting when absolutely nessesary. It would make a lot more sence then a pure caster type but sadly they didnt give us arcane warrior spec. :(

As for people realizing that your a mage and not just some guy that likes to hit stuff with a staff.....
I always assumed that after you become champion, they know your a mage and they know that you have a few mage friends, but they think its not worth it to go after you, or get on your bad side, due to your fame and obvious skill.

Oh, it's not only me then. Good.

Cullen is indeed a bad templar and I like him that way. I wanted to leave Bethany at home but then I met Cullen and he said:

And I thought: "Wow, thanks for the warning!"

Everyone does this, not just Cullen. Heck, if you play blood mage nobody in the group will even notice. It's just a game mechanic thing.

And even if the spell-casting and staves didn't tip him off, Anders' screaming 'THIS'LL TEACH YOU TO TAUNT A MAGE!' every few seconds probably should have. :P

... Heck, I trigged the Fenris/Anders convo in the Gallows where it starts with Fenris saying, "So let me get this straight. You're an abomination?"

I was standing right next to Thrask at the time.

Consider how you first meet Cullen...

You're investigating the same thing he is (missing Templers) and you save his life at Wilmod's Camp; you follow this up by solving the mystery and telling him quite bluntly what happened despite Ander's request that you "downplay the blood magic"; mage or not you clearly gain his respect and he appreciates your efforts.

Indeed there are two occasions where he will not press for details (how Keran was tested & where you got Ser Alrik's papers); if he knew the details he'd have to do something about it.

Think about it in terms of Casablanca, Cullen is Captain Renault and Hawk is Rick Blaine the place is overrun by baddies and the both of them are just trying to make the best of things.

To be honest I'd rather talk to Cullen then Anders, at least Cullen will listen to reason.

So I suppose one could assume that had (mage) Hawke never gone on the deep roads expedition, he/she would have been caught by the templars as Bethany does. But because of the deep roads expedition, and mama Hawke's efforts with the vicount, Hawke's wealth and noble title protects him/her from the templars in the short term (Act II).

Hawke isn't the only noble apostate in Hightown. The templar priority seems to be collecting the "poor" mages. It's clear that Meredith has her eye on Hawke at the end of Act II but Hawke ends up Champion which shields Hawke for a little longer.

Considering his brilliant ideas about mages and how they should be handled I think Hawke should be grateful Cullen doesn't notice her/him.
