I see All the ignoring of magic from Hawke and company as a game mechanic and a design flaw, not character related. I think we're supposed to handwave that Hawkw is keeping these things secret, which is impossible to believe given the over the top combat style.

Even with the Origins style it's impossible to believe as you're stil raining fire, ice, and electricity on your opponents.

No one is pretending not to be a mage, only that Morrigan isn't an apostate. It's easy enough not to have her turn into a spider in front of templars and such.

Ah alright, gotcha.

Still, that's a flaw that even Origins couldn't have covered.

Am I the only one who was grateful that Cullen was the Templar who escorted Bethany to the Circle?

  • At least with my Hawk he's a friend (in so much as the game allows).
  • He's not recklessly pro-mage (Thrask) or a Templar sadist (Ser Alrik).
  • He's aware that Meredith is going off the deep end and is watching the situation carefully.
  • Finally and perhaps most importantly he's a gentleman.
That said I choose the aggressive dialogue option just so I can watch Hawk and Cullen posturing before Bethany breaks it up.

Agree with all points.  I just finished that same scene a couple of days ago... Cullen responds by saying he could arrest the whole family for harboring a mage but he will overlook that.  He stands firm but he obviously does not want to cause any more trouble with Hawk than it's worth.  Smart man.

But you could imagine the Nobles..."My daughter must be in the Circle, why does the Champion's sister not have to go?"

Cullen:  "Alright, I've heard enough of your complaints... as if I don't have enough trouble as it is.  I'll go and arrest her myself."  (Secretly is ecstatic as he has always had a crush on the Amel mages) Ha Ha

I was glad it was Cullen too. Not Alrik or Karras or any other crazy templar. Cullen serves the Maker first and foremost after all ;)

Oh, it's not only me then. Good.

Cullen is indeed a bad templar and I like him that way. I wanted to leave Bethany at home but then I met Cullen and he said:

And I thought: "Wow, thanks for the warning!"

This line is present when you play mage hawke as well. Only difference that Cullen says "I've been hearing intresting things about you, Hawke. I hope they're not true. So I guess the templars had some suspicion about Hawke. And Carver mentions several times how they are under templar scrutiny

Hawke isn't the only noble apostate in Hightown. The templar priority seems to be collecting the "poor" mages.

Magic is money - can't let the poor people have access to such temptation without the Circles getting their cut of the take. The templars speak of protecting people, Anders is on about freedom... but in reality everyone wishes to control the money. A nobleman is less of a threat since he presumanly has other motivations or at least better discretion than some beggar who wants food.

A BAD TEMPLAR WHO DESERVES TO BE PUNISHED!

::long pause::

This isn't that kind of thread?  Oh.  Well, that's embarrassing.

I see I did not quote it exactly right. But it proves the templars were indead a bit suspisous about Hawke. My guess is that had Hawke been the sibling left at home during the deeproad trip, she might had been discovered just as Bethany was. Now she got home rich and could set up a respectable facade. If Carver joined the templars he might have been able to hush some of the rumors as well.
But I wish they had knocked out Cullen in the first scene when you meet him. He could have fallen unconscious and all had been a bit more logical.

I was using blood magic right in front of Cullen and he didn't do anything about it.

You can use blood magic in front of any of the templars, Meredith included, and they won't do anything about it. It's called "game mechanics". Bioware didn't write it into the scripting that templars and chantry priests would attack your character for using blood magic in front of them.

If you have Anders in your party and go speak with Meredith at some point...can't remember when...they both start bickering back and forth and she says something along the lines of control your friend...he's clearly a mage sticking up for other mages. You got queen B herself not doing anything about it.

Maybe Templars radars aren't working the best these days....maybe it's all that armor.
