Well.. if I read it right it seems like pre-patch Arelex was using Aveline as a
tank which limits the dps potential of your party quite significantly. Pre-patch it was useful for preventing knockback to your rogue but ever since they decided to remove any element of challenge from the game you really don't need a tank for your rogue.
There are also some changes that make things like stagger less frequent (from cleave) and lacerate more powerful. As disorients are pretty easy to do a focus on disorient CCCs from your companions may give you a few more staggers to play with which could be useful.
Shadow is also even more powerful dps-wise but it may not fit in everybody's style of play.
But anders has haste and any reasonable setup with hawke on haste = everything dead
edit: That was silly of me. I read it reversed.
If you're playing unpatched with 1.03 guides you'll probably find a setup without Aveline as a tank slightly more glassy/fragile. Threat management for non-shadow rogues can be reasonably tough and you do need to avoid getting knocked-back.
I don't think an Aveline tank is that necessary though, so I would say that playing with patched tactics wouldn't actually be that bad. You'll know it best though- if you and your companions are dropping like flies/not dealing CCCs or damage very often then you might consider changing tactics.
But from a theoretical standpoint I think that prepatched gameplay can fit with the patched tactics, just not as optimally maybe.
