Friendly fire on nightmare only seems like a bad decision to me.
It feels like cheating when you can fire off huge aoe spells at your own team mates with out fear of injuring them.
I enjoy having to gear up with electrical resistance so Merril can go crazy, or just using precision casts and careful manuevering.
And yet playing nightmare seems on par with masochism. One go through ,sure, Ill play nightmare, but on alt playthroughs I just want to enjoy the game, but have to at least think a  little tactically.
Since my nightmare playthrough is bugged, I started a second playthrough on hard difficulty and it's feeling really weak. It like your just picking everything off without any thought whatsoever.
I really feel the system is shoehorning me into nightmare mode. But I really dont think that all friendly fire people are nightmare only players.
I know the game is released and it is what it is but maybe on 3 you guys
might think about totally revamping how you're making these difficulties.

My suggestion is at least make 2 FF settings and 2 non-FF settings.

why would you gear lightning resist anyway? None of the electricity spells do FF. =p

ff and assassins are the only thing that make nightmare actually difficult.. and I don't mind it because at least its challenging compaired to nightmare in origins which was... not difficult. The only thing that annoys me is the fact that NM basically forces you to go with a 3 range 1 melee setup because melee aoe just oneshots other characters

Nightmare is as difficult as it is not because of FF, potion stealing and all the other junk, but because the enemies do double damage and even basic elite have 10-20 times your health. It is not because of strategy (we know the AI sucks hard, doesn't regroup, doesn't call buddies, doesn't run away, rarely holds position, never avoids AOE effects)

It's the equivalent of playing Civilizations (original) on Emperor mode.

I'm playing on nightmare right now and I like everything about it except for the friendly fire. I like friendly fire with spells like firestorm, fireball and what have you, but I hate how certain abilities can friendly fire and you have no idea how large the radius of damage will be, i.e. winter's grasp, mighty blow, assault, etc. I think it is cool how they can affect multiple enemies if they are really close together, but I find it ridiculous that they affect your team too. I think that if those spells are going to do that they should either not hurt your party or only hurt the targeted enemy.

Oh and rogues doing backflips off my face into stealth, that pisses me off too. Cheeky bastards.

Yep... that and the stupid random elemental resists (oh btw this random bandit is immune to cold damage) is making me put it back down to hard for my next playthrough. I've done it on nightmare once but hey, i want to play around with different characters this next time to see what its like. Hell the last part after i killed anders and until i got bethany back was the hardest part of the game cause i was basically down 1 party member, they had to be a melee one and constantly got insta gibbed if they took 1 step to far

I did Nightmare with Mage!Hawke, Varric, Aveline and Fenris. Admittedly the latter required some expert micromanaging, seeing as Fenris liked to Mighty Blow people to death, but I managed. The Ancient Rock Wraith was the hardest because Fenris was basically useless for most of the fight. I had to have him sit in a corner while Avelien tanked and Hawke and Varric shot him from range.

I agree that melee FF is the pits. Isabella was almost made to get gibbed. I cant even recall how many times I've let my control of her slip for one second only to have er jump right between the enemy and my special attack.

Melee friendly fire is something so rare in games that its inclusion demands an explanation.  I suppose it needed to be done because Warriors make better nukers than Mages now.  Another reason is that the High Dragon, Ancient Rock Wraith, broken Maker's Sighs, and poorly balanced force mechanic weren't enough of a deterrant to use melee Rogues on Nightmare.

Man so I think I'm gonna have to look up that difficulty tweaker mod i found floating around somewhere. Melee FF, assassins and random resists annoyed me on nightmare so i threw it down to hard on this one and the difference is a lot more than i thought it would be. Really hoping i can tweak it to find a middle ground of the general difficulty of nightmare minus the stupid parts of nightmare

I recently finished my first Nightmare run but I'm not sure if I want to do that again. Too much fake difficulty. I mean, Origins had some of that but a lot of enemies were using the same abilities that were available to you. Nightmare on DAII could have been amazing if enemies used the same abilities and they had actually taken the time to improve the AI, but instead they just gave them some cheap abilities, mixed in random pokemon-esque elemental immunities, and cranked their stats up to 11. Boring.

I've been struggling to understand the reasons for this mechanic.  It really looks like the enemy health & damage were designed to make FF many times more lethal to the party than the enemies.
