EA kept The Sims Online, a failing flop of a game running for nearly four years before they finally shut it down.

I have no doubt there will be a DA:3. And hopefully they will learn you can't pander to one segment of gamers.

Actually, you can and in fact should pander to one segment of gamers. What they need to learn is that they can't pander to everyone at the same time. Or rather that they can, but usually it doesn't work.

If anything, those numbers are impressive.

How anyone can think a game that sells multiple millions of copies is a failure is beyond me.

Those numbers aren't even = 1 mil. close, if you add them all together, but still falls short.

It's interesting...DA2 is selling similar to Oblivion on the 360.

Well, I really enjoyed Origins and DA2...the last thing I would want to see is the end of the franchise. I hope that's not the case. :(

I agree. Both games were wonderful, and discontinuing the Dragon Age series would be a tragic thing for them to do. Was it as packed as Origins? No. But Dragon Age II is a good game! Image IPB

These numbers can just mean those who were interested bought it, not that people recommended against it.

Probably, or simply just very bad at math.

I think more specifically those numbers show that without DAOs strong name and a bunch of pre-order bonuses and paid off review hype this game would have been dead in the water even in week 1.  Even with those it was pretty much in the emergency room in week 2, on life support in week 3, and should wind up R.I.P. in week 4.

*sigh*.

Explanation: Those numbers are over 842,315 and include consoles only.  They don't include PC sales, which would bump the total up to well over a million.

And it has only been three weeks.

I might be going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing more people will buy the game in the coming weeks.

At any rate, the sales numbers are impressive.  Tidy profits are being made from DA2.

Heh found this kinda amusing. You know that March Madness link about voting for Bioware developer that Chris posted/stickied on top of the forums?

Mojang AB is winning.

to be honest i'd vote for Mojang regardless of who else they faced off with, Minecraft is just too awesome

I think people are missing a point regarding the decline or DA2 sales vs DA:O sales.

DA:O was released at the beginning of November... which is followed by the busiest time of the year sales wise. It's obvious sales weren't going to drop much with christmas on the way.

Most games not released in the holiday season have a huge drop in sales after the first/second week and then just stick to selling tens of thousands in the subsequent weeks, but those numbers do add up in the end.

Traditionally, AAA games always make some 70% or 80% of their sales during first 2-3 weeks.

DAO was one of the most discounted games of holiday 2009... black friday discounts put it below $40

you'd have to be an idiot not to consider picking it up back then even if you didn't like rpg's

yep, video games are extremely front-loaded nowadays, the only exception to the rule are games made by Nintendo or Zynga

Nice backpeddling; OR does a potenial of DA2 having sold 1 Million sold copies now equal "multiple million", or do you honestly believe the PC version to have sold over 1 Million copies alone?

It's perhaps better that Bioware focusses entirely on consoles and doesn't make DA3. Better to have a good memory of BG, KotOR and DA:O then having another crappy sequel.

Sales did so well in the first week because of brand and company recognition. So yes, DA2 will be a financial succes, at least from EA's point of view. In the long run however, Bioware is slaughtering the goose that's laying the golden eggs, trying desperately to alienate their original fanbase in a mad quest for (their image of) console gamers who are (according to them) less decerning.

Sad to see Bioware degrade like this. But that's what you get for getting involved with EA. Out goes creativity (too expensive, console gamers are stupid anyuway so they think) and in comes accelerated growth charts.

I think people will now be very careful of 'blindly' buying Bioware games in the future.

I would say a safe guess would be 700,000 copies on PC.

But According to VGcharts, Origins sold 3.3 million on consoles only, and so far DA2 has sold about 940,000 copies on consoles so far

And Origins was primarily made for PC.

On Marketing the trailer was very misleading to me and a few of my friends. That said, I own the PC version, I hate consoles (but bought a PS3 to play Heavenly Sword, WET and Blu-ray) DA 2 seemed like it was made to play on consoles better, but it plays fine on the PC. From my view point Mass Effect 2 seems easier to load up DLC, so it goes without saying that DA 2 will be the same. DA:O was hard to make DLCs for because of its plot. With ten years to tell a story in, There can be 10 DLC shoved in for the fan base. Bioware wouldn't have to make DA 3 for 3 to four years if they kept the DLCs coming, As to word of mouth, one good DLC is all it will take to gather more constructive comment. The franchise isn't dying, it is just being reborn, and it looks like a very healthy baby.

I was such a fangirl when DA2 came out, by the time people were posting and I was downloading the game I was defending it... Then when I played it, I realized that they were right...I think some of the people that are in denial in this thread...either they never bought the game cuz daddy and mommy didn't want or their monmy and daddy did want to. Everyone is entitled to their opinion...specially US, angry COSTUMERS. Bioware and EA only read the reviews of console
gamers.

PC marries to DA franchise
Xbox is the bridesmaid
Ps3 is the flowergirl

DA2 is born

PC divorces DAO Franchise
Xbox is the REAL mother
PS3 is XBOX sister...

I have to say, that made me seriously LOL

And on an unrelated note - does VGChartz count digital sales or only retail ones?

I find it odd that neither DA:O nor ME2 PC sales can be found there.

Had a bad feeling before the game's release, decided to wait for the UE to come out.
Borrowed the game from a friend of mine, finished it, was disgusted by how Bioware tried to poorly cater to everyone except of straight males.
Had a look at first week sales, was amused.
Had a look at 3rd week sales, leant back in my chair, smiled.

Got ready to pre-order The Witcher 2.

As far as my understanding goes, digital sales can't really be tracked. So no, you will not find them from there. I think PC sales in general are hard to track.

I'm not backpeddling.  You're picking nits.  I believe, all told, the game WILL sell over 2 million copies.

Even if the game doesn't sell another copy ever, a million sold is hardly a fail.

Sim Kitchen is that way  - - - - >

All things DA 2 related need a healthy dose of sovinism to satisfy the balance of ying-yang.
