They have to set up a base somewhere if they want to perform experiments on the different species or turn them into milkshakes.

Hit and run tactics would probably work in our favor there, instead of fighting them head on.

But... we already destroyed the Collector Base which did Just That.

We've had this discussion in private, but at the heart of it I think there's going to be one particular element that's more important than all others: that the Reapers are not as numerous as many assume. I doubt we'll be facing millions. I doubt we'll even face tens of thousands. I'm skeptical on even a few thousand.

That, at the heart of it, the Reapers won't have the numeric freedom and flexibility people assume they'll have, and have magnitudes less than the worst-case fears.

The ending of ME2 shows only 295 Reapers. :wizard:

Yeah. So?

They can still establish a stronghold on a planet to discharge on, drop off prisoners/indoctrinated folks, turn them into their new soldiers, eavesdrop on our transmissions, etc etc.

Why? They can put off all the experimentation until after they've won the war.

Indeed. In fact, it is your fault that I betrayed the galaxy to the Reapers. How do you live with that?

Possible. How can we reasonably speculate here? We don't know exactly how long the cycle has been going on or if they produce a new Reaper every cycle or every other or whatever. There easily could be thousands however. It is dangerous to assume that there won't be.

I'm not saying we surrender right now. I'd prefer to wait until the Reapers arrive and then see how badly they kick our asses. If it is clear that we can't win though... then we should capitulate so that at least some legacy for our species endures.

Someone has too much time on their hands. Regardless, I doubt there are even 295 dreadnoughts or carriers in the entire galaxy. If the Reapers fight intelligently then 295 could be more than enough to crush us.

Yeah. So?

I was referring to the 'research if they can make other species into milkshakes', when that stage has already come and gone.

They can still establish a stronghold on a planet to discharge on, drop off prisoners/indoctrinated folks, turn them into their new soldiers, eavesdrop on our transmissions, etc etc.

Or they could do that with huskification tech they already have built-in. They don't need to stick and defend a conquered planet to the point that it can be used against them. Huskification tech is so 'meh' to them that they're content to leave them on planets to be stumbled upon between cycles. They can take the tech with them: they don't need to transport slaves to be processed elsewhere. Reapers can already do that internally (as shown the Derilect Reaper), and set up shops on the worlds they are conquering.

If the Reapers want to eavesdrop, they'd be much better off sending a probe, a satellite, or hanging around in space. There's no reason they need to put up a defense for a scouting planet when they can do the scouting better from elsewhere anyway.

Without metagaming to pre-know our chances? Only by the shred of hope of some intel EDI got from the Collector base. Otherwise, there could easily be not just thousands, but hundreds of millions  of Reapers: the Leviathan of Dis was a billion years ago itself, and every 50,000 years between then if we just average one Reaper every other cycle...

So they just know how to combine a turian and a krogan to form the Cannibal or how to combine a batarian and a human, turn an asari into a swollen carrier?

Obviously, the odds are against us. So, there will probably be some sort of extraordinary piece of intel from the Collector base or some other source that proves to be the key to everything.

The Collectors had millenia to perform such experiments to find out... so why not?

There's no actual evidence to prove that the Leviathan is a Reaper, though.

Nope. Only 500 years.

Yes, because 500 years is so significantly shorter as to warrant immediate research during the invasion.

Alright, I'll refrain from the eyeroll: I was referring in particular to the duration of Council Space in this cycle. For the better part of 2000 years, the Collectors have had the time and opportunity to study every significant race and combination that's occured during the interim.

Why would they need to do that now and not just after the war?

Er, it doesn't need to be. It just needs to be have killed by one. It fits the same validity of 'evidence of prior cycles' as all the other planet scans that point towards the Reapers.

Because those are their infantry units in ME3.

META-GAMING!!!!!!!!!!

Also, infantry aren't particularly relevant in an interstellar war.

So you destroy their ability to create infantry. So what? That doesn't stop their fleet.

No, I meant exactly what I said.

Pretty much, yes. I've based all of this on knowledge that would be available to Shepard or anyone else in the MEU. That's the entire point of the thread.
