lol, I would laugh for 2 days straight if BW just randomly gave us a Prothean/Collector Squadmate/LI.

In fact, I'm rofl right now.

We got a Geth companion in ME2, lets just leave it at that.

Companion...eeeeehhhh maybe not, I wouldn't mind being able to talk to one in some sort of Vat or fluid or whatever, a protheian in stasis or whatever controlling the keepers or blablabla, atleast let us get a certain look at the bloody things!

I think they're pretty integral to the story, and would rather remember seeing them as they were than the bug thing collectors.

I prefer a Hanar over a Prothean companion/teammate/shipmate/fellow chessplayer in the ship.

My thoughts exactly. I think that Liara might play a significant role in this given that she has the Shadow Broker's network and is an expert on Protheans.

So far, everyone has given quite a few viable possibilities for their return, and since I doubt Bioware would leave so many posibilities without doing something with them in the next game, its possible we will see one in ME3 in some shape or form. Aditionally, nobody has given a very good reason for why they won't return other than 'theyre dead'. Some might say its an aspull or whatever, but I think those same people might have said the same thing about a Geth party member before ME2.

It seems that some people either just don't want to accept the possibility or think that Bioware would just ruin the game. IMO Legion's introduction was really well handled, and it could have been handled very badly. And not only that, but he is also a nicely written character, and was recieved well by fans. So, I have no doubts that Bioware could handle introducing a Prothean into the story organically.

I feel like this would be a "gamebreaker."

I think the Protheans served their grand purpose in the ME series: Giving us a fighting chance against the Reapers, being what we aspired to, and serving as the ultimate horror of what we might become.

I'd like to find some more Prothean artifacts/logs, but actually having a living, breathing Prothean in the game? I don't think I would like it.

Would you like to see a Prothean that has somehow survived (in stasis, gravity well of a black hole, etc...) or has been created from Prothean/or Collector DNA (and given the cipher by Sheppard)? We've got so much hype and info on the Protheans and yet its all sketchy, at best. I'd like to see a living Prothean in Mass Efffect 3.

A thought I have played with and will probably get fried for going there....Vigil mentions it doesn't know what happened to the Prothean science team after they went to the Citadel....and at various points in reference to the Keepers in both games, it is also mentioned there are places on the Citadel (Presidium, I think) that are inaccessable to all but the Keepers...I have some times toyed with the idea that the Prothean scientists maybe in stasis somewhere in the Presidium, being kept by the Keepers.

Or there could be a great big Halo-esque twist.

*Harbinger to Shepard*
"Shepard; you ARE Prothean. But this galaxy is OURS."

*ridiculous boss battle ensues, Admiral Hackett gives Shepard a secret weapon before dying*

... yeah, you get my point.

I think this scenario was set up in ME1 when Vigil said he did not know what became of the dozen or so scientists that wrote the program for the Keepers.

Contrived or not, I would enjoy talking to one of the Prothean masters such as the one Harbinger "released control" of at the end of ME2.

@massively accelerated

I said they could be protheans, not that they definitely were. It is more likely an older race that has been in hiding for multiple extinction cycles. What I am sure of is the fact that they are NOT reapers. The notion completely contradicts the main story. If the reapers were hiding there then they would have joined sovereign in it's attack on the citadel and taken over already. As for the possibility of the anomalies being prothean, well, we are talking Bioware and Mac Walters. If they want to retcon the story to bring back the protheans then they'll do it. I don't much care either way

Why's everyone so obsessed with having a Prothean/Collector companion?

The only 'everyone' I've seen so far is the OP and other weird posters I didn't waste my time to read.

Personally, one thing that turns me off RPG stories is the use of incredibly unlikely companions. Sorry to disagree with you, OP, but I would consider a surviving Prothean one such. That's one of the things that turns me off Obsidian sequels so much: their insistence of making the party a traveling circus of the most unlikely freaks in the setting.

Consider: would having a Prothean team member actually add anything to the story they were trying to tell? I would argue that the story of the Protheans is over. Even in complete genocide, they've given others a chance to fight back that they didn't have, and I'd argue that the ME series is the story of these young species, with humanity being notably the youngest on the scene. While seeing a Prothean would admittedly be interesting, I feel having one walking around wouldn't add anything more than what Vigil has already done.

I find that the sole fact that the Shadow Broker though that the answer for defeating/escaping the Reapers lies with Protheans is a big hint towards the fact that Protheans are still very useful in the storyline (There must have been heavy hints that the Protheans had something in works before their destrucion or knew something). Also, Protheans are the only known race that has constructed a mass relay of their own, other than the Reapers. And when Reapers arrive they will deactivate all the mass relays in the galaxy to prevent the bulk of the galaxy from regrouping and making them an easy target as they take the galaxy cluster by cluster.  Further on, Protheans are a race that has fought the Reapers, and have some knowledge of what works against them, and what doesn't (one doesn't need a living prothean for the last one, but field experience always beats prototyping).

And plus, I would like to hear Prothean history and ultimate fate firsthand. It would carry much more weigth in my eyes.

So... shepard can be brought back to life after being in an explosion, suffocating in vacuum, reentering atmosphere, crashing to the ground, and being dead for 2 years. We can go anywhere in the galaxy, we can have a geth companion, we can kill hundreds of enemies with only 3 people, there are living machines living in dark space that can talk, strategize, and kill ****ing everything, people can kill you with biotics, asari are an all female race, a prothean VI still functions after 50k years, organics can be turned to husks a dead reaper can stay in orbit around a gas giant for 37million years, .... and you still don't think there's a possibility that somehow, somewhere, there's a single prothean still alive?
