Companion armor... am I the only one that likes the change?

I actually love the way they handled it.  Finding
upgrades is fun.

Digging through mounds of gear and comparing stats on 8
different characters... not so much.

I would prefer if the characters
had a subtle difference in their appearance after each upgrade, though.
Or, maybe let us choose one of three outfits for each character, or
maybe have them change a bit at the start of each act.  But the upgrades
- I hope that's here to stay.

I respect your opinion, but this was one of the changes that pissed me off the most.
In an RPG I expect to be able to upgrade my characters armor (I consider companions to be my characters too) having all of your companions look exactly the same throughout the whole game is bland and annoying. More than half the gear you loot isn't even useable. Aren't RPGs about Loot and looking awesome?

I really think the reason they didn't allow this is so they wouldn't have to make a dwarf/elf male female mesh for all of their armors which smacks of laziness. The reason they said they did it was they didn't like seeing peoples DA O characters and how they all looked the same. So to fix that they gave your companions unique looks.....which keeps them all looking the same.....but I guess it shaved a week or two off the development cycle.

I do like to keep the characters iconic but there should be a few options that fit the theme of the character.

We all have different things we like, but this was definitely not one of the things I enjoyed. However, rather than rehash ad infinitum the complaints about that, I'll just vote no and hope you get some people who support your POV.

Thanks, all :-) It's definitely a case of different strokes for different folks, I agree. Of course, too, maybe I'm just weird ;D

Edited to add:  What irritates me is the fact that the mage robes ALL look the same.  Seriously.  Unless it's a named / set robe, they all look the same.  Exactly the same.  Grrr.

Yah, not being able to upgrade my companions armor was not cool in my books and also not being able to re use runes once applied in armor and weapons, that sucks.

I like it as well. I'll sacrifice being able to change companion armor for more distinct looks anyday. Though I've never been a fan of big and pointless inventory systems like ME1 or DAO where 90% of the crap you pick up is vendor loot. Though I will say that their appearances should of changed more over time. Wearing the same outfit for a decade is rather strange.

I'm with you with liking the change of companion armour :D. It's really good cause it means that character keeps their look.
In Origins, if you changed your companions armour it totally changed the way they looked. I really love the decision to give our companions their own set of custom armour/clothing :D.

I liked the way DA2 did companion armor also.

I like DA2 for what it is, but some elements I liked from DAO are missing... Like chatting and getting to know more about the characters; the fact your hero's choices mattered and the old foraging/skills system. I miss coercing and steal commands also. They were fun. Customizing your companions was fun too, but like another poster said above, I'd like to see subtle changes in the characters appearances when you update their armours.

Nothing wrong with companion specific, unique armor. What they should have done was include 3-4 of them throughout the game with the same ammount of upgrades to at least give the illusion of customization while keeping the character's personality.

I prefer the new version with armor but I would be really happy if there was two or three sets that you could choose between yourself =)

I like each character maintaining an iconic look. However I thought the upgrade once and forget about mechanic sucked. I'd like to see more options to fill those upgrade slots.

I love the new inventory system. I haaaated equipping all of my party members, particularly since most of the outfits ended up looking rather silly on my characters when I focused more on stats than how they looked. (In fact, I hadn't finished Awakenings yet when DA2 came out, and I tried to get through it but I eventually gave up just because I was *so tired* of the inventory system.) I definitely agree that it would've been nice if the upgrades showed small changes in the outfits, or if they had a couple of different outfits to choose from (like they did in ME2), but overall it was one of the changes I'm most pleased with.

In fact, I'm already dreading playing through DAO again and dealing with the inventory system (among a few other things) just to have a second playthrough for my second DA2 playthrough...

I think the fixed companion armors in DA2 and ME2 look good at first, but get incredibly boring very fast.

I also like characters maintaining their look but I'm not sure finding gear that is useless because of this is a good tradeoff.

I also like the change for consistency. I tend to obsess about character look and choose sub-optimal gear just for aesthetics, but then it makes the combat harder. This change fixes that problem for at least 3/4 of my fighting team :)

I respect others' opinion in enjoying loot-based motivations for playing RPGs, but I'm not in that camp. I do agree that more options in the upgrades and some visual effect to them would be welcome. As would some change of look through the game given the 7 year time frame. But all in all I would even agree to take the piles of useless loot for classes that aren't me in exchange for the streamlined companion armor system. And you can still deck them out with +X accessory items if you really like micromanaging inventory.

I actually really liked the change. I really liked the characters keeping their iconic looks. I think the idea could be improved on, but I definitely like the direction it's going. Maybe if their outfit changed visually when you bought an upgrade for it, or perhaps if they had like.. 5 companion specific outfits with different types of bonuses. For a mage, for instance, having five visually different outfits, one giving a bonus to types of elemental damage, one giving a bonus to mana regen, etc. Might be an okay compromise for the people who like to customize their characters, and those who like their characters to have a certain style.

To the original poster, you are not the only one who likes the changes... though I probably don't like for exactly the same reasons as you. :P  I just like it when characters have their own looks. Nothing to do with taking pleasure in finding upgrades and such. I'm the type of player who kept Morrigan in her robes all the time; I just didn't have the heart to put her in a dowdy nightgown like Wynne.

Sure, there were moments where I thought, "Man, I'd love to give these bracers to Fenris!" but I got over it. I never noticed my companions to be suffering in combat as result of no armour customizations, so the extra rune slots upgrades + amulet + rings that I gave them must have been enough.

With that said, I also agree with Silentmode (quoted above). I think only Aveline, Anders, and Merrill got one significant change in their looks. Fenris, I can somewhat accept that he couldn't care less about changing his armour. But Isabela? She couldn't shop for some nice leather pants all these years? And Varric? He's just in plain clothes... surely he must have other things to wear... unless he treats signature his outfit with the same love he has for Bianca?

I like being able to use all my gear and was disappointed when I couldn't at first I had thought keeping one armor meant that they had the same look but that was tied to the breat plate like mandalore in kotor 2. Of course it wasn't armor meant the entire suit and was torn that I had to sell the armor pieces i couldn't use because of "different body models" (yeah f'n right bioware).

I totally agree.  And actually, I'm another one who left Morrigan in her original duds, at least until you got the upgrade after her personal quest - which had the same look.  I just didn't want to throw out "I like my characters to look pretty and unique" as a reason for preferring the new system, although that pretty much sums it up ;)  Alistair also wore templar armor most of the game because I love the "skirted" plate.  Sadly, the armor sucked, as I recall.  But he looked cool, by god!

I'll also admit that on my first playthrough when I found the first upgrade (it was the piece for Varric) I exicitedly whipped the camera around to see the change in his appearance.  I was a bit bummed that he looked EXACTLY the same :P

it's fine...the new armor upgrade stuff is fine..but i just wish...with each upgrades...there's more of a "obvious" change to the looks for the armor to show the upgrade. Granted by Act 3, some companion's armors do change (and depending on the romance options) but again, I would like to see the change happening to the characters, not just...puff there is is kinda thing

Yes, this is one of the few changes I actually liked, though (like others have already mentioned) I would have liked more visual changes in the armor (not to mention other aspects, like some aging of the companions) as the years went by in Kirkwall. (I will admit occasionally trying to put a helmet on a character only to be stymied by the armor ban, which was a bit annoying.)
