For me it gives mixed messages

i do like the fact that you can keep the original look of the characters (hated how morrigan looked in pretty much anything except her theme gear.)

But then again i love to stat variables, its always nice to build your character to a certaint role with his gear. aka stacking cunning for crits and what not. now that the companions just have the upgrades its not that fun anymore. i really hope they revert this change when it comes to DA3.

maby include an option to keep the original theme of the characters even though you equip them with different gear.

The change in this compared to Origins did not really bother me much. I never had my companions switch armor a lot in Origins anyway, and often they would look goofish with half an armor set and a few pieces from a different set while I was still collecting a set. I would like to have had the ability to switch between 2 or 3 outfit looks though, like in Mass Effect 2.

They could have kept the uniqueness while still allowing players to optimize companions with other gear.

and looking awesome?

Yes, and the default companion apparel look awesome.

I love the changes. Sure, I also like being totally OCD and gathering loot and spending time choosing what would fit best for everyone. However, especially as a rogue in DA:O, I hated how everyone looked the same. Stat-wise, every piece for rogue was unique and amazing and had it's own set of strengths but visually it was boring and repetative. I love how each companion can have their own look. Could it offer slightly more changes to appeal to the OCD crowd? Sure, it's not perfect, but it is a step in the right direction.

Fenris wore the same leather armor for ten years.

I hope he washed it occasionally.

I didn't mind the change that much. I like the idea of level enhanced weapons like Bianca.

Be nice if you could customize the stats on the armor a bit.

I'd perfer to pick my own armour...

DA:O was great for that...

Me in Dragon Blood
Alistair in King Calins Armour
Sten in Dragon Bone
Wynne in Warden Commander... (She was still a Healer I just added Arcane Warrior to boost her Defence)
Leliana Superior Drake scale

etc etc etc

Only one I never changed was Morrigan, she was the only one that looked rubbish in anything but her own gear,

I didn't mind the companions having their own unique look at all. I liked how you found little upgrades as the game progressed. A couple of different looking outfits would have been nice though.

Torchlight is about loot, it is fun.
Recettear is about loot, it is fun.
Borderlands is about loot, it is fun. Granted it is a shooter with RPG elements but the elements in question are skills, levels, and loot.

The sifting through loot argument is standardfare for some folks that don't want to spend time checking out gear but still for some damn reason insist to play RPGs. I played an RPG where the developer listened to that argument and got rid of sifting through loot and the end result was more tedious and awkard than loot bags. That game was Fable 3.

Yes, and the default companion apparel look awesome.

No.

it would have been nice if every upgraded added a look to the companions. Like an upgrade for merril gives her a nice belt with a scroll carrier or something. Or upgrade for Aveline added some armor pieces...idk

I actually love the way they handled it.  Finding
upgrades is fun.

Digging through mounds of gear and comparing stats on 8
different characters... not so much.

I would prefer if the characters
had a subtle difference in their appearance after each upgrade, though.
Or, maybe let us choose one of three outfits for each character, or
maybe have them change a bit at the start of each act.  But the upgrades
- I hope that's here to stay.

The upgrades are fine, but they really should have multiple sets of armor for more varied builds & looks & aspects of the party. In one game in Origins I had my party all dress similarly so that we looked like professionals

there is a psychological study about the human brain and loot in video games...we get a heightened sense/rush when seeing loot on the ground and that "rush" is addicting.  I wish I knew what it was called...

I love this change because the gear that I don't use can be sold for currency.

Personally, I like it. Imho, it's better than Origins by lengths - and I like that I can still equip different weapons (on most characters) and fiddle with jewelery.

What I'd like to see would be choices about the upgrades - something like there are seven or eight different upgrades available for each companions armor, but you can only have five of those. That'd be a really good improvement imho.

I really liked it, I prefferred it to Origins because, well, I hated everyone looking the same, and that the final armours all looked pretty dire for the most part. That said, it could have done with some improvements, such as (not necessarily together):

- Having the upgrades show on the models.
- Having 2-3 Unique armours that could be swapped out (say one per Act, like the sets for Hawke), while still remaining iconic.
- Having customisable upgrades rather than set ones, to allow players more freedom while retaining the unique looks.
- (My fave, if the most work): Having 2-3 unique armours per companion that each had their own pgrades (which altered them slightly). Admittedly, keeping the aount of upgrades the same, this would be 8-12 different meshes per companion, which is actually quite a lot.

I could accept it more if the upgrades changes them visually, or if you had say 5 or 6 different outfits to choose from with each having a different boost or stat.

That said the best way to do it is classic style full equipment, in my opinion.

I found that with the ability to re-spec, 4 items to ware, 1~3 runes to enchant, and 6 skill trees, I spent like 1 hour per companion in the last chapter just to make them fit my design of team.

The companions are still very customizable, just not their looks.

I respect your opinion, but this was one of the changes that pissed me off the most.
In an RPG I expect to be able to upgrade my characters armor (I consider companions to be my characters too) having all of your companions look exactly the same throughout the whole game is bland and annoying. More than half the gear you loot isn't even useable. Aren't RPGs about Loot and looking awesome?

I really think the reason they didn't allow this is so they wouldn't have to make a dwarf/elf male female mesh for all of their armors which smacks of laziness. The reason they said they did it was they didn't like seeing peoples DA O characters and how they all looked the same. So to fix that they gave your companions unique looks.....which keeps them all looking the same.....but I guess it shaved a week or two off the development cycle.

I agree with much of what you say here but I never think of the companions as my characters. I think of them as independent people that my character interacts with and generally leads.

These adjustments would greatly improve DA:2 in my mind.

The simplest and best solution would be to have one or two iconic outfits for each character (same as Morrigan's) while at the same time allowing the player to change that outfit if they feel like it

The new armour system could work but I don't like how it is implemented. Companions should change their clothes at least for each act, and there should be a variety of upgrades that you can swap in and out. The upgrades should provide some visual difference.

The way armour is implemented in this game suggests it was more about both simplifying the system and reducing the amount of work required than 'streamlining'.

I think that the upgrade system is a step in the right direction but it could be improved a lot. I am all for NPC having unique look. But not the same look during the entire course of the game. At least Anders and Aveline change their outfit and that it's better because you see a result of your efforts.

The upgrades at the end are too linear and feel a little bit dumb. I would have liked to have some kind of ability to choose the result of the upgrades to companion armours in a way that resembles the ability system (combos and the like). The way you can upgrade Bianca after the final Varric quest for example is really good.

Moreover, since you cannot use 2/3 of the looted armours you find during the course of the game, it would have been nice to have the ability to use those items destined to the other classes for crafting (I'm thinking of something in between the essences in NWN2 and the omnigel in ME1).

I honestly like the new companion armor system as well. I would have liked for the companion armor to get the updated looks though once you find all 4 upgrades though. And add a toggle option for the looks between the original outfit and the upgraded one.

In DA:O I had Morrigan wear her robes throughout the whole game even though I had better options, just because I wanted *someone* to look original in my party of identical rogues and generic plate armor warriors and Circle robe mages.

I also agree with FedericoV, it would be nice if the companions had changed their armor over the years slightly. I really loved to see Aveline change from the warrior I met in Ferelden to the Captain of the Guard.
