Keep the new system, but give it the effort it deserves instead of what we got in DA2.

That's all DA2 seems to be, lots of great ideas that got rushed out with no effort, most likely because of EA.

They've already said they wont use this system like this again.

I must have missed that.  Where did they say it?  More importantly, are they going to fix it in DA2?

I'm not sure if it was discussed by any dev on the forums, but Mike Laidlaw spoke about it in his interview with Gamespot.

Here is the link to the second page where it's found; it was the last question discussed on the page:

www.gamespot.com/features/6305575/p-2.html

Mike Laidlaw:

Long term, do I think it hurt people's connection to them? I don't think
so. I think if anything, the criticisms I've seen leveled at that are
largely, "I don't like it, simply because I either want to control them
or I don't." That's fair and something we'll end up evaluating over
time. It's likely that we'll end up coming back to a way to equip your
followers, but at the same time, I really do think that having their own
visual signature is really important.

I'm hopeful Laidlaw's comment seems to suggest tweaking the companion armor in da2 to give more choice rather than a full reversal to what it was before in the next installment.

I like the changes with our companions armor. I prefer playing the storyline, rather than spending forever equipping my entourage. I thought it was great that we still got to equip their weapons. I know many do not like the changes, however.
I believe there is a middle ground to be had. Maybe keeping the companion's style/outfit the same but letting us choose upgrades? Just a thought.

I liked the change, although it would be better if the companions had different outfits for "off-duty" and "on-duty".

I couldn't care less, honestly. Sure, it's nice tweaking your companion's armor and min-maxing it, but I also like that they keep their "look", instead of looking quite similar. Perhaps it could be improved, modifying stats and tweaking the graphical part (changing palette, for instance).

They could perhaps make 5 different versions we can switch between and lelt us choose the upgrades? That would be something I would like at least.

i like the change , i prefer them having there own unique look . Maybe they could do both and let you swap there armour but have the option to keep there unique look.

I actually love the way they handled it.  Finding
upgrades is fun.

Digging through mounds of gear and comparing stats on 8
different characters... not so much.

This is the problem, you and bioware assumed those were the only 2 options.

Despite recent Mass Effect 2 / DA2 history the SOLUTION to a bad inventory/menu screen is not always "remove it"

There are other options, we HAVE the technology, we CAN rebuild him!

For example

DC universe online

New armor = new stats. Style/appearance can be locked/unlocked so you can upgrade stats on gear without changing the look PLAYER OPTION

That is only 1 of 12 possible solutions we can suggest.

By all means, keep the "unique" never-changing in look/style companion armor. But let me change it if I want to. This is a single player game, so what my PC and the companion NPC's look like is nobody else's business.

I kept Morrigan in her outfit, because that was Morrigan to *me*. I never put Wynne in a shmexy robe, because that was Wynne to *me*. Me, myself, and I in a single player game. Others who decide different don't bother me in the least. It's their single player game, after all, and none of my business.

Last time I looked, nobody but me sees/plays my PC's but me. Well, except my family/friends looking over my shoulder while I play.

Personally (as in "imo"), I think it was simply far cheaper to just stick the NPC companions into never-changing, boring, yawn-inspiring (to me) armor.

But really, what's the point? That's not different than the current upgrade system in any meaningful way.

I like the fact that there is unique companion armour, it adds character to the companions for sure.

HOWEVER I still want control to equip other armour, just keep their unique armour in the inventory. But don't STOP me from changing it. That's a bad call by Bioware showing they are losing touch with their audience.

The point is you *can* completely customize the look of your character AND upgrade armor at the same time.  It's self evident.

They shoud just have a "lock companion armor" gameplay setting. If on, then companions will have their style locked. You can still give them armor to equip but it never shows on the actual model. This is like a JRPG system which has been discussed. If "lock companion armor" is switched off, then equiped armor shows just like in DAO. I think this is the best of both worlds, problem solved.

The only issue is that it means companions will not have unique models, because they need to be able to wear armor (same as in DAO). If bioware wanted, they could make unique models and then replace them with generic for when the setting is off. I don't think this would be a significant amount of more work then what they did in DA2.

Unfortunately, based on Biowares seeming direction, I'm guessing companion armor is here to stay. Too bad.

The system used in DC Online and Aion is great, you have full control over how the character looks and can still chose the best peices for the character's build.

I liked it. Keeps them more in-character. I'd prefer if the upgrades had some subtle changes that made them feel "meatier" or something. Maybe whenever you get all the upgrades it chances entirely but remains in-character.

The "lock companion armor" suggested by Psython is a wonderful idea, though.

It's a downgrade from Origins (I love comparing gear and Min/Maxing) but an upgrade for the Mass Effect series. I hope they put in armor upgrades for specific characters in ME3.

I believe, too, that some sort of a compromise between the armour systems of dragon age 2 and dragon age origins would be ideal. It really sucks to find all the cool class specific loot that you have no use for.

Going to quote myself here

I have said this countless of times in a different threads.

The problem with a Unique Characteristic look for your companions is that Hawke doesn't get an inconic and unique characteristic until Act 3 and even then he still needs to search around for it.

So Hawk gets some extremely boring, plain and average clothing. And looks like the next Average Joe next to super heroes.

Your party in your game is your super hero clan. And it makes more sense to be able to outfit them to match one another.

So now your friends have iconic looks.

But Hawke is just some fat fanboy friend who wants the superheroe's autograph.

I made a crappy image to illustrate my point: http://i1129.photobu...ng?t=1302051372

I sooo want to be Hawke now.

I like the change. Better to have an iconic look than end up with Morrigan in the ridiculous mage clothing (READ: Hats) from the first game.
Let's face it, yeah you could customize each piece on your companions, but it was all just stats and there was maybe three models for each class.

Not for me (obligatory "personally" injection here), it wasn't. I was very connected to my Warden's NPC companions. I would never switch out Morrigan's clothing, because nothing else in the game was "her". I would never put Alistair in templar armour, because my Warden took to believing that he really hates the templars. And so on, and so on.

There would be no way I put a smexy robe on Wynne, or skirty armour on Oghren, or (gasp) Sten. Sheesh, I even agonized about doing right by Shale, for crying out loud. I loved the characters, still do, and stats didn't matter to me at all.

I liked it. I don't have to micromanage inventory for an entire group everytime I pick something new up.
It's also 'their stuff' so there's a boundary that just makes sense.

I don't necessarily mind it, my biggest problem with the companion armor was the upgrades had no cosmetic effect on the character.

Aside from Avelines armor chane into Captain
The romance armor chances (of which only Anders and Merill had any big chance)
Carver/Bethany as gray wardens

That it... When I get an upgrade for a companion I want their armor to actually change.
