Demons Souls is better than both. Roll on Dark Souls <3
If you have a ps3 and haven't played Demons Souls, then by god get it now.

True dat.  It is one of the most amazing RPGS I've ever played.

Confirmed  The game is pure evil ... but damn addictive :wizard:

I've got something called the "Black Box" never been opened. Do I open it or buy a retail copy?

The sales numbers seem to back the passionate fans claims.

Eh to me it's too early to say this.  For one thing DAO came out during a holiday and like I said I personally know more people who didn't buy DA2 because they didn't like DAO then didn't buy it because of the new direction it took.

In the long run you may very well be right and DA2 won't match DAO's numbers but it's already sold enough that it most studios would consider it a sucess.  If you consider the game a failure that's certainly your right, I personally liked most but not all of the things they changed.

I don't think the game is a failure, but it does seem like they sacrificed hardcore fans to gain casual ones. Which so far looks like it has backfired and is not only going to cost them sales of the game but dlc sales.

I don't consider it a failure, but it's a C minus.

It's not nearly the game it should be. I, personally, will not be buying DLC and will be much more wary of future DA games.

Not a failure at all, but it''s definitely disappointing in some areas that many people agree upon.
But Bioware takes notes, so I don't think we should be too worried.

Dragon Age II is an excellent story.

I just wish they hadn't charged me $60 to read it.

Depends on the criteria for success or failure.

If the goal was to sell more than Dragon Age: Origins, it will likely be a failure, though there's no proof one way or another. It's just that Origins sold well for a very long time due to word of mouth and Dragon Age 2 isn't getting the same love.

If the goal was to create superior game in quality, it's not a failure but closer to failure than success. People may disagree, but even those who like DA2 admit that Origins is as good or better.

If the goal was to see whether a game with streamlined mechanics and a shortened development time can make a tidy profit, it is likely a success.

Three different criteria with three different results.

Things like this are subjective, it really depends on the context and what you consider to be success and failure.

I dont think the DA2 is totally failure but it was lack of some element in DA:O as follow (dont compare with mass effect series)

- Keep playing in the same area (Kirkwall, Sundermount & etc) almost 95% of the game, which 5% is the escape from Lothering. Since this game is adventure RPG, is it very nice to keep adventure in the same place over & over again.
Conclusion: Disappoint

- About Combat, true that it is improve from DA;O, but there is a bug. Let say the enemy stand behide the wall, then you will dash to the wall.
Conclusion: Acceptable & good work for the combat envelopment

- Companion armori can be flexible for this, in my opinion, the arrangement of armor is a future plan in combat & better strategic.
Conclusion: Acceptable

- Relationship, i find out that the DA;O did very great work in this area like good relationship improve of companion stat & wrong conduct will bring companion to attack you more like real life, unfortunate is DA 2 dont have.
Conclusion: Disappoint

Storyline, story is too focus on Hawke & it is very short compare with DA;O (maybe less adventure than DA:O)
Conclusion: Disappoint

- Main character weapon/damage: i like the part which double handed weapon attack faster than DA:O, but i find out the companion deal more damage than Hawke (maybe is just me?)
Conclusion: Good work for the weapon & frustrate about the Hawke damage gap compare with companion

- Endinglaughable short ending & they did a terrible works here
Conclusion: Very Disappoint

This is merely my opinion toward the game & hope DA:3 improve, not mean to offend anyone. If anyone dont like this, just treat it as a bull

Overrated and overpriced piece of rushed "almost-failure".
Gameplay was an awful grind. Next time I will just read dragon age wiki.

Not a hater. Just a gamer who likes quality games and thus unable to label dragon age 2 as such.

To be honest... it was better than FF13. So BioWare is still putting out a better product than SquEnix... although with Dungeon Siege 3 around the corner BioWare may be left wanting. We shall see.

I will not lie: the game had it's flaws. I think the biggest problem is that Bioware tried to make it more like Mass Effect, and modernize the series a bit more. It also tends to have a slightly higher crash rate on my ps3 (no, I do not yet have enough money to get a good pc gaming rig). Still, the game is graphically superior, has the ever-lovable Mass Effect dialog wheel, the combat is more dynamic, your character has more facial reactions and speaks regularly, your character is referred to by name (well, last name), and they give you more incentives to preorder the game. The Black Emporium is a very welcome addition. Dragon Age 2 is by no means a bad game, and I very much enjoy it. It saddens me to see so many people insulting the game and giving bad reviews just because Bioware tried some new things. Remember: no game is perfect.

Like it's been said, it's a really enjoyable game. Lots of improvement but there were also a lot of things they should've kept from the first game.

It's far from perfect, it has a lot of things that bother me but it's far from a failure. That is just butthurt talk right there~

Loved the game, it had issues mostly due to the short dev timeframe but no way in my eyes was it a failure. I'm on my fourth playthrough so it can't be that bad :P

Nope it had high critical reception, genreally good user and fan reception and it sold well. If that's considerd a flop then I don't know what you consider a success.
-According to Metacritic it has a generall critic score of 82 of 100
-According to Gamerankings it has a generall critic score of 80.84% out of a 100%

You say it has a good user and fan reception but don't cite any user and fan ratings...odd. Also keep in mind this is a sequel not a stand alone game and when ratings, sales(not SHIPPED), and outlook appears to be below the original game the word "success" is not the first thought that comes to mind.

It was OK, Releases of such get rated on a scale of 80-100/100 and an 80 is not good. You have to really f' up to get below that. Jade Empire holds an 81 on PC and that's about the level I would place Dragon age 2 on. Although I would place Sonic Chronicles above it sadly, it was an OK game. OK in the rpg genre is death though. Every game has rpg influences now and you really have to prove yourselves to get to the top. Bioware did and now they are going Lionheart Black Isle. This may soon to prove an end.

It didn't live up to its predecessor. So yes, I deem it as a failure.

No it's not a concensus. Dragon Age 2 has already sold over a million copies. That officially makes it NOT a failure.

Ugh. Again, failure or success is relative to the goal.

It really depends on what Bioware/EA wanted to achieve with Dragon Age 2. By their standards, it is more likely (though not certain) that Dragon Age 2 was a failure.

Or conversely, what you wanted Dragon Age 2 to achieve. That's just subjective because everyone wants or expects something different from the game.

But I will say that when making judgement on Dragon Age 2 in such binary terms (success/failure), it is closer to a failure than it is a success.
