The game is not a failure, it's an average game and it will have average sales.

Much like children, they don't have to be failures to be disappointing.

The fact that there's such a debate proves that it's not.

Depends on where they set their goals.  Sales are not near as good as DA:O but they put a quarter of the dev time into it and it shows.  So I figure they have to earn a lot less to turn a profit.

Not a complete failure just rushed, simplified, shallow. The game definitly has been touched by EA and not in a good way. I have two complete playthroughs that aren't complete and that is killing me,on top of the fact they took away the one hairstyle I used, 'the two buns" so yeah I may just be a tad emotional.BTW.... gimme my darn buns back!

A failure? No, not even close. While this is not Bioware's best work, it still deserves recognition for what it did right. The disappointed stems not from DA2 being a bad game, but from it not being DA:O 2. There is nothing inherently wrong with this, but it really overshadowed how decent the game is. (Recycling dungeons aside)

Sure the game has it's flaws, but over all it's a game and I have been having FUN playing it. That's why I play games, a few hours of relaxation, escape from the daily grind.

Yeah, waves and waves of enemies appearing out of thin air for the single reason of extending the time in combat sure is fun. Revisiting the same cave/mine/dungeon for the tenth time to do the same boring fetch quests sure is fun as well as running around a boring uninhabited city with nothing interesting to do; cameos for the sake of cameos that override your decisions of the previous game sounds like fun to me!

I love how you can escape from the "daily grind" into another massive boring grind... probably says a lot about your quality of life :(

You really know nothing about me or my quality of life--it's likely much better than anything you could ever wish for or hope to accomplish in 5 or 6 life times. You wish to insult me just because my opinion of the game is different than yours?????  What a jerk.

Definitely not a failure. It good have been better in parts, yes, but I still thought it was an absolutely awesome game and the best I've played since ME2.

This may have been said before, but it really comes down to what Bioware's goals were.

If it was a goal to become more accessible to a "wider" audience, and by wider audience I mean people who don't like RPGs generally...I don't know if they've failed or not. My nephew prefers games like Halo Reach, but he'll sit down with me for hours to play BG: Dark Alliance 2 on PS2. He liked Dragon Age 2 because it was faster, but still he says he prefers Dragon Age Origins.

I have no idea what a non-RPG playing fan thinks of Dragon Age 2. Would they play Dragon Age Origins? I don't know.
If the goal was to create a game that is superior to Origins...then I say it must be seen as a failure.
It's a matter of opinion of course, but I prefer a slower pace for RPGs. I like to sink my teeth into the story and the choices, the atmosphere and detail. I felt more satisfaction in this way while playing Origins.

If the goal was to make money. Again I do not know. What is the production cost? Advertising? How many units have sold? What are the projected sales?
If the goal was to please the long time fans, results are obviously mixed.

It has a similar feel to when Fable 3 came out and people were saying how they preferred the previous releases. People who enjoyed Fable 2 were really vocal about how much they disliked Fable 3 and why. I found Fable 3 enjoyable, but buggy to the point of distraction. Same situation pervaded during that release though.
Lionhead wanted to capitalize on their successes and decided to go for a more mainstream audience with Fable 3. They "streamlined" a lot of details from Fable 2 going into Fable 3 and the fans noticed the change and they HATED it.
The fans were promised something better but with less in it. I hate the term "streamline". In business terminology it means people are going to get fired. Now I do hate the term when applied to games. It means the company is going to change your favorite things about a game, make it less enjoyable and then package it with slightly better graphics and call it streamlined.

Their goal was the CoD audience and even they backed out, when they realised there is no SHOOTING in it.

In general, it is a massive utter failure, but since their goals were Quick dosh, they managed to do that.

Quite a shame, a good company ruined.

I enjoyed it. I like the humour, the faster-paced fights. There aren't as many options as DAO because it's a different premise. DAO made the point that anyone of any background could go on to be the Hero of Ferelden, whereas DA2 puts you in the shoes of one specific character - Hawke. There is little story to seek out that isn't brought to Hawke's attention. In that regard, it's different and not what I'm used to in an RPG, but is that a bad thing? Should we always seek the same formulas for RPG bliss or should we occasionally try something new?

I think my gaming life is richer for any experience it can get, and considerably so for DA2.

FAILURE is a strong word. That actually depends on the goal.

Let say if the goal is to kill zombie(s) then a nuclear launch on an entire city without
regards for any un-infected human survival could be consider a success.
But if the goal is to kill zombie(s) but also save as many un-infected human survival
as possible then perhaps a nuclear launch might be a bad idea.

With that said, to me DA2 is just another  ' epic failure ' of a game that could
have been a Legend.

Nah, those of us who are enjoying it are either too busy playing it to worry about anything else, or we just aren't in the mood to post on the forums when people are intent on convincing us that we didn't hated it.

I don't think everyone can agree on anything at all, but fail... for me at least- hell yeah. Someone said they still hadn't played to the exciting ending. That got me to thinkin'- it is indeed exciting- like every time a soap opera episode ends with 5-6 characters pointing guns at each other, all being each other's father, mother, mistress, half brother/sister and such and it says "To be continued!"
That kind of exciting. Origins could stand on it's own- It had closure- DA2 is an overlong premise setup for DA3. Now DA2 and DA3 will not be able to stand up on their own. I find that suck-y

You didn't have to pay $60. Wait a week, youtube it.

No it's not a concensus. Dragon Age 2 has already sold over a million copies. That officially makes it NOT a failure.

Hmmm ET for Atari sold 1.5 milllion

Imagine: Babyz sold 2.44 million

50 Cent: Bulletproof 1.59 million

South Park N64 1.14 millon

The Sims Franchise hold over 30 million sales

Pac-Man Atari 2600: 7 million

 Just to name a few...

lol.

Most of those titles were when internet was non-existant or total sales or something. They didn't sell 1 million copies in first two weeks.

And the sims in that list is your opinion.

Most were giant sellers with most sales in the early period and they collapsed after sales with a ****** poor game. Everything is opinion **** for brains with this.

Congrats I show some of the biggest failures IMO and sales sucesses but it does not count because you know **** better no matter what...

Brtiney Spears is better then Nick Drake according to your logic..

Listing The Sims as a 'failure' is the most ridiculous thing I've read today.

Whatever your opinion of it may be, it is one of the best selling PC franchises of all time.

Success is only based off of sales?

GTFO.

Morons buy in mass and automatically it is the best product. **** the hell off.

Is Dragon Age 2 a failure? Depends on your benchmarks. Any game that makes a profit financially is not a failure in that sense. Are you saying it is a failure because it does not have the same sales as DA:O? Do not know yet. Is it a failure to you because it did not meet your expectations? That is probable.
It depends on how you define success and failure. If EA/Bioware make a profit then it is financially a success, but may not be a critical acclaimed success.
I sense that people are hoping DA:2 is not a success. You may feel that Bioware will then go back to what made DA:O successful. If you believe that I have some items I wish to sell you.
If EA/Bioware do not make money on DA 2 do not expect a DA 3 or any DLC for DA:2. If DA 2 does not sell enough to make a profit you can expect EA to pull the plug on the series and put its money elsewhere like Mass Effect or other projects.

God I hate oldschool gamers...

Least Bioware won't be making another game aimed at them, that's for damn sure. Not after the reaction both Dragon Age games got.

I used to not second guess buying a Bioware title.

That is no longer the case. Thanks EA!(sarcasm/opinion)

The decline started showing with ME2(short cuts/mass appeal) and DA: Awakening.(rush job)
(my opinion)

I never was a huge fan of DA:O, the game had it's own issues yet still felt worthwhile. It was the Nexus mods that kept me coming back. The tale was pretty decent if a little tired.

After playing ME2 I was convinced EA Bioware wouldn't commit to making more than above-average games.(more opinion)

I've yet to purchase DA2 because the consumer reviews just don't look good and I feel I can
no longer trust Bioware to produce more than an above-average(at best) game under EAs wing.

I also don't like their marketing strategy/promotions, too much hype and spin and not enough honesty.(opinion)

That's just how I see EA Bioware at the moment. Have a nice day!

I'm sad to admit that I think DA 2 is a flop. Everything that I loved about the first dragon age on PC has either been removed completely or dramatically stripped down (including graphics). I've loved Bioware for years, but after this game I am now skeptical about their future projects including Mass Effect 3. I don't know if its the merge with EA or what, but something has definitly changed.

Stopped reading right there son

DA2 is a pretty game, and I can say this with a high-end rig that's been doing all the games so far (well I haven't tested the new Crysis 2) with the highest settings. Maybe "awesome" is overstating it, but they're good. But it's ok, why pass a perfectly good excuse to behave like a child and insult someone just because you can, right?

These are just for comparison purposes. Take a look at their detalization, vegetation, light, and overall graphics.

DA2 is far from pretty. Your standards are too low.
In addition to weak art style and visuals, the game had way too many other flaws such; story, awful level design, dumbed down character interactions, race limitations / design (no fem dwarves, anorexic elves), itemization, lack of choices that matter and so on and on. Funny how people currently complain about elves being anorexic in the mmo Rift. They must have not seen DA2 elves yet to truly understand ugly. :)

Maybe you have an inferior machine for the DA2 engine:
