Is it a general consensus that Dragin Age 2 was a failure?

I think one of the most important things that the fallout from DA2 has shown the gaming world is that when you have incompetent people at the top who are so full of themselves and are totally dismissive of the community, that you are basically asking for disaster.

Its sad that a handful of bad apples can sour the entire Bioware tree.

All we can hope for is that Laidlaw and his team don't get their hands on ME3, it really is the only hope left at this point, especially since SW:ToR will be DOA.

I don't think it can be called a failure. You can hate it or not so long as Bioware learns from their mistakes than its a success. If DA3 comes out and its a rush job with a less than satisfying story and as much problems as DA2 then its a failure and I don't think anyone will defend it at that point.

And what reason is there to even bring this clearly-not-going-to-happen fantasy scenario up, other than just raising an alarmist specter that is?  ME is and always has been totally separate from DA.  As far as SWTOR: you keep stating this like you actually know what will happen.  You don't.  No one does.

Oh I do. And when it does, I will come back to these same here forums, find you, and show you this post and make you eat your words.

How do I know?
Well, lets just say that I will not jeopardize someones job just to 'prove' something to a faceless anon on the interwebs. Especially one that has his face and faith so far up Bioware's rear end that he is blind to anything negative said about his precious.

It's not a failure, but I certainly would not call it a resounding success either, but that's only my opinion, I enjoyed some aspects of the game but did not get that dragon age feeling, to me the cameos were a cheap shot.

LOL I find it funny that it sounds like he thinks Laidlaw and friends sabatoged DA2 on purpose or something.
How do we even know Laidlaw is the reason DA2 sucked or whatever?  Is it just because his face was on the videos before the game came out?  Come on lets just point fingers here.

It wasn't a failure as far as I'm concerned, i thoroughly enjoyed the game and am looking forward to the dlc and next full title.
However, i do hope bioware don't give in to the greed of EA and take some time with the next full title.

I blame him for being simple. He saw and heard more from Laidlaw then the good doctors or other developers during production and assumed he is resposible for the bad things in DA2.

Now I don't hate DA2. I like it enjoy it more then Origins but really BULLS*** reason we didn't get our overhead cam.

I think a good number of people I have spoken to on and off the forums agree that it was rushed, has a number of flaws and generally falls short of the very high bar Origins set. That said, many many many people - including myself - enjoyed the game.

Origins it ain't, but it is a good experience nonetheless. In terms of general sales it is doing pretty well, so I'd hardly call it a flop.

I concure.

Well, Laidlaw's responsible for some changes. Not the overall budget, obviously, but if you're really, really, upset about, say,  the fast-paced combat, he's the guy to blame.

Assuming EA didn't mandate that approach, which is conceivable.

Well, I won't care. I'll just write it off as you happening to guess correctly. Just to save you the future effort.  I'm sure you'll be utterly thrilled with your petty "victory" though if it does end up dying, so, um, go potential future-you?

Laidlaw also seems to not be the most PR savy person in the world...

Laidlaw is a designer, not a PR flack. Also, I enjoyed the game quite a lot. Eagerly awaiting forthcoming DLC/expansions/sequels.

Depends on how you measure failure.

DA2 might sell more copies than Origins. Especially with that astronomical advertising budget they've got. But that's just it. Those few extra sales, tempered by the extremely negative word-of-mouth that's built around this game... and then measured against the huge advertising expenditures...

At that point, 'failure' begins to sound like an apt descriptor.

Honestly, if you're the lead ANYTHNG involving the game, especially the designer, you should take some lessons on propper PR. Would help keep you from looking like you dont know what you're doing / alienate your fans.

If you hold a position that exposes you to the public and interviews, it really is a good idea.

Well, I don't think it's a stretch to say some of the problems with DA2 are definitely his responsibility, but it's also hard to say exactly what choices were his alone.  I think the combat revamp (aside from whether you like it on the whole or not) is pretty obviously down to him, as he's focused on that a lot in interviews and it certainly sounds that way, but, say, the voiced Hawke? Nope.  That was made by higher-ups while Brent Knowles was still in charge.  Laidlaw just inherited that mandate when he took over the Lead Designer role, and whether he agreed with it or not, Hawke was getting a voice no matter what. Another factor he'd have had no control over was the deadline, and I think it's obvious the deadline was a big part of the game lacking in a lot of areas (including literally lacking in a lot of areas). I mean, the guy is still an employee and just plain doesn't have ultimate power over the DA franchise.

I honestly believe that it's far from failure.

It's not a broken or terrible game. It's not a awesome game. It's "OK". Nothing more.

More like finding out your longtime boyfriend isn suddenly a smoker. He changed in a not so good way, but lots of other parts of him are fine and thus you love him anyway but wish he'd change back. If he didnt change then you wuold eventually leave him.

I've heard (and understand) a lot of the negative feedback. Is it generally acknowledged that this game was a flop. Or what's the deal? And will DA2 stand a chance against Skyrim in a one-on-one comparison when its all said and done?

I have mixed feelings about it. I enjoy playing it despite its many short-comings, and most of its short-comings (limited maps, graphics glitches, awkward time-line and choice recognition) are SO DAMN STUPID. It makes me mad that it was so close to being a true classic. But I've still replayed it more than DA:O, which was an epic game with some VERY LOOOOOONG quests that thoroughly discourages me from replaying it.

What's Dragin Age 2 anyway?
