Is it a general consensus that Dragin Age 2 was a failure?

Heh what? So what your saying it's the same length if you skip the content in the first one?

No you get just as many hours out of it as you do the original, minus the expansion packs.  Its not as "epic" as DA:O because it only centers in and around Kirkwall.

I'm not sure we're actually in the business of coming to a general consensus here.

What's the metric for being a "flop"? Overall sales? Critic scores? Profitability?

Well the metric measurement of a 'flop' is the demonic red glow coming from the forums link on the Dragon Age 2 site

That sh@t's glowing bright h@@ker red and whenever I I click the link I jump saying 'G@d damn' from the 3rd degree burns on my finger tips.

Hell hath no furry like forum scorned.

I'm pretty sure Dragin Age 2 is possibly the biggest failure in gaming history. Poor BiologyWare.

While I don't think it's as terrible as some of the haters say, the game was obviously rushed, and overall a very poor representation of what Bioware can do, when compared to DA:O and ME2.

It is simply awful, the only reason to play it is so that you can appreciate just how badly a game can be made. Then you can laugh at bioware sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting "lalalala DA2 is so casual cool lalalala everyone loves it".

I can accept the story and everything as a part of the series as long as most of the DA3 imports come from origins except for a few minor ones from DA2 for plot advancement. But yeah DA2 is a fail in the story telling aspect because the 10 years thing broke continuity and there wasn't enough progress between characters and the city itself, just a gimmicky plot device.

I think part of the issue is you ask on the forums and you don't really get a good representation of what people thought. Look at the sales number then look at the active number of people in the forums, this is only a fraction of people who bought the game. Most of the people posting are the ones who feel very strongly about it and most of those are the angry ones but that's how it always is with games.

In real life I know six (seven including me) people who bought the DAO. One liked DAO better, four including myself preferred DA2 and the others disliked DAO so much they didn't buy DA2. I'm the only one who comes to this forum.

I guess my point is you always have to take the forum talk with a grain of salt. People who post here are the passionate but not necessarily the consensus.

I will admit I there were certain things about the game that certainly made me scratch my head in confusion when comparing some of the glarring flaws to Bioware's usual standard of quality but  I wouldn't go so far as saying the game is awful. It was certainly a step back but I don't see them making the same mistakes a third time.

Bioware push their fake high ratings in you face when you enter the dragon age 2 site.
Its lame because the game doesnt deserve any of them....

It's true that "Dragin Age 2" failed. It failed so hard that no one even knows what "Dragin Age 2" is since it didn't even make it to the shelves.

The sales numbers seem to back the passionate fans claims.

Well, Skyrim isn't out yet so those claims are kind of rediculous. I do have hopes that it will be fun, myself.

I like Origins but it has it's own things that could of been worked on, nearly none of which were looked at in DA 2. Some of the aspects I liked about Origins were gutted and tweaked in very bad ways in DA 2, so I do think Origins was a better game. Is DA 2 a failure? I wouldn't go so far as to say that, unless we define how it failed. The title is a failure because it is neither a sequel to Dragon Age: Origins' story nor is it the same in how the game looks or plays. Something that isn't the same should not be said to be the same. I'm sure it's a fun game to those who just picked it up, but it is disappointing if alot of people expected any kind of sequel, whether literal or spiritual to Origins.

It's very much a sequel. Quality her eis irrelelvant. Like DA1 more all you want as that is fair, but DA2 is definitely the sequel to it.

The sales and reviews speak for themselves. It's an inferior though not horrible sequel.

Unfortunately, this leaves the series at an impasse.

EA's not going to give nearly as much funding or development time to the DA team on future installments because of this, meaning the best we can hope for from future DA installments are glorified expansion packs.  This is a self reinforcing effect, each failure will break down EA's confidence in the franchise further.

We can only hope for the franchise's swift death, lest it drag down BioWare with it.

Of course, if sales for DA2 pick up and exceed or match those of Dragon Age Origins, things just get worse.  EA will take that as a sign that DA2's rushed development works for the series, and futuer sequels will be much of the same.

There are people who hate it, and I'm sure that the consensus among them is that it's a failure. Then you have moderates like me who think the game was good if somewhat flawed. *shrug* I really doubt that you're going to find an overall consensus about the game even if you get everyone who played the game in the same room and locked them in together for a month.

Sales for DA2 are currently exceeding that of DAO during the same time period of it's release....

I'm talking about Dragon Age 2 of course.  I don't know what Dragin Age is.  Is it fun?

Do you actually find that suprising ? It's a sequel, it was half way there on pre-orders anyway. Plus it's been advertised to an almost ridiculous level.

It did not meet it's objectives of being mass market, that makes it a fail.

I'm not surprised by it.  I'll pay attention to the sales numbers at 6 months before I make any judgement on how DA2 actually did as a game.  Its still WAY too early to say one way or the other.

And this, of course. Having worked in Sales and Marketing I can safely say: One month is nothing. 6 months. First Check. One year: Second check. If it hasn't reached 3-4 million sales by then, I'll be surprised. It sure looks good, given that it reached over a million in less than two weeks. Pre-orders or not, that's pretty damn awesome for a game that isn't a shooter or a strategy war game ala Total War. If only the Adventure genre........ah well. THAT genre is truly in trouble since 1999.:P
