Well of course! Who wouldn't? They even said in the same interview they were hoping for upwards of a million.
Yeah, I know, which is why I amended my post to say "millions" because, while I don't think they're all "We're gonna get WOW ya'll!" in EA-land, I do get the impression that they want to be in a very firm second-place in the MMO world. But that sort of thing is generally just asking for it and seen as grandiose, so they've wisely not gone there.
I agree. WoW fans have seen too many supposed "WoW killers." Any other game that comes out is very likely to be written off by them immediately if it makes any such claims.
But I was very suprised at Rift's approach, with their bold "We're not in Azeroth anymore" marketing scheme, and so far they have done very well. And again, most of that was due to a very polished game at launch, and a very high involvement of the developers to provide support.
Rift works because it basically takes WoW and fixes/improves things that would require a complete restart of WoW to do, thereby directly appealing to the WoW fanbase of people who want more WoW but not WoW itself...
TOR will succeed or die on the brand name of Star Wars and Knights of the Old Republic, and whether the gameplay is any good
