I know I'm a little late to answer and I've only played ME and ME2 yet, but I think NO.
Nothing implies that there's a connection, except the timing.
As for why and how it happened:
Vigil said on Ilos, that even a reaper cannot withstand the attack of a combined Citadel fleet.
But Sovereign was arrogant or desperate(doesn't sound like a reaper though) and probably didn't know how close Shepard was. It thought that it could hold until Saren finishes his job.
If Shepard didn't fight Saren, he could have rerouted the Citadel's control, letting the reapers in.
Given the above, I still think that Sovereign took a huge risk by openly attacking the Citadel.
For a sentient machine who will "endure" in a million years from now, he was f*cking careless.
He could've just killed Saren, hide a few years with the geth, then team up with Harbinger and the collectors. Or if they didn't know eachother, Sovereign could still get new "allies".
" ... fumbling in ignorance, incapable of understanding. ... I am beyond your comprehension, I am Sovereign." well, at least it's true... we have no idea why it was such an idiot.
With all due respect, CeoBohga's explanation is flawed, even the basics of reasoning are incorrect.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'm still interested.
Did Shepard's defeat of Saren lead to the destruction of Sovereign?
