I have yet to find this in the guide, but on my first playthrough I had a character's(Anders) clothing change on my near-late game.
I had assumed it was due to upgrading the armor all the way, but it only happened for Anders, and none of the other's whom I also had 4 upgrades for.
Does it have to do with a romance? Or is it just Anders clothing that always changes?
Sorry if in wrong forum btw, I assumed it had to do with gameplay.
Companions Clothing can change?

Anders' armor will change to black after his companion quest Justice. It's not linked to romancing him.

Fenris and isabella have slight changes with romance, although you have to use a makers sigh on issa afterwards to get it because its bugged. And Merrill gets a whole new set after she moves in with the romance. As a note anders only gets the new suit if you agree to distract the grand cleric, my last one refused him since he wouldn't say why and he didn't get the whole 'even more depressed and emo' black suit

all companions except for sebastian (that i know of) have an armor change when a special condition is met, for ur sibling (bethany/carver) their armor will change depending on the choices you made for the deep roads expedition at the end of Act I. Aveline will change after the prolouge (and in act II if u complete her companion quests in act I) isabella, fenris, and merril will change armor if u romance with them though for fenris and merril u only have to sleep with them while isabella requires a commited romance. Anders will change after his Justice quest. Varric will not change cause hes just that awsome
