So many mages turn to blood magic..anyone can see that making a deal with a demon to gain power is evil. anyone can see blood magic for what it is. But what of the templars?

In DAO, there was a templar in denerim that had been using Lyrium for so long, he'd lost his sight, and most of his sanity.. he had to have another templar babysit him, even. I have to ask the question, seeing as how the idol (which Meredith later weaponized) was made of pure lyrium, with THAT much power.. any templar could become twice the monster a blood mage could. Call me crazy, but it makes me have to question exactly who's the worse of the two? Lyrium is at the heart of a Templar's power... and if lyrium can cause one templar to become THAT powerful? the chantry's control of lyrium trade may be as much for their own protection as for their army's benefit. -shrug- just my thoughts on the matter.

You have a point with the lyrium, but I wouldn't call either of the groups 'monsters'. There are definately possibilities in turning to evil for both of them, and then mages are more easily corrupted.

But the only monsters in the world of Dragon Age are demons and darkspawn.

Templars are basicaly pushing mages to blood magery. So yeah, Templars are to blame too.

I'm with Moskus on not really calling either of the groups monsters. Circumstantial and whatnot. For example, the Ferelden Circle looked like it had more crimes against the templars than the actual mages from what we saw (excluding the whole takeover, that was just a kick to both mages and templars).

hm, okay maybe i should have used "" when using "monsters" as i was using it more as a figure of speech, given that's basically how each side views the other. my mistake.

The guy who was protecting the entry of the chantry in Denerim. He was an extrem version of the messed up templar you meet in the Hanged Man.

Here we go again.

Templars going bezerk perhaps by super powerful once in lifetime lyrium from a mysterious idol = 1
Mages either on purpose or by accident becoming abobinations or summonging them = 10,002
Number of mages that totally blame the templars and the circle for them chosing to become evil demon summoners = 537

I don't think any amount of the type of refined Lyrium the Templars use would lead to becoming a super anime monster like Meredith.
The pure Lyrium of the idol seems to be something else entirely.

It was the red color, color of evil. Obviously all nasty and evil things are red!

I wish I had more opportunities to tell Templars off when they go off on their rants about how mages are all dangerous and could be corrupt. I kept wanting to point out that mages aren't the only ones who are susceptible to the temptations of power. Spend all of act III watching Meredith do exactly what she accuses mages of doing (falling prety to temptations and scheming for power" in the name of "safety" disgusts me.

I just finished my second playthrough and I set everything up to side with the templars this time, but in the end, I just couldn't.

Interesting question would be: Do all templars end as lyrium addicted mental wrecks? That's one hell of a way to avoid the retirement pensions. Kudos to the chantry.

Oh, the Wardens. Right! They even clean up their own mess by dying in the Deep Roads and getting eaten by darkspawn.

the Grey Wardens actually do have a retirement plan.

give them a sword, send them into the deep roads and kill as many as they can before they die. now THAT'S how you get out of pension plans..
