I got Dragon Age: 2 when it first became available and have had a wonderful time stabbing mages in the face, but I got a little nostalgic and decided to go back to shanking Darkspawn... my DA:O no longer works. It loads and plays beautifully... for about 5 minutes.
I didn't have this problem until I downloaded DA:2. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, do you have any suggestions? If I can no longer play DA:O because I have DA:2, well, that just blows.Image IPB

No one else has had this problem? This seemed to belong in technical support, since it's an issue with the game crashing everytime I open it, but now I'm not so sure. Should this be on a different forum?

I guess it should be on a different forum, an hour and not a single reply?
But what forum should it be on, is the question... I mean, the game crashing after five minutes of gameplay, no matter which game I load or what I try to do sounds like a technical problem to me, but...

I'm noticing some issues--slower loading times, more crashes, and toolset crashes galore. I actually noticed it when I installed the DA2 demo, but it's continued after uninstalling the demo and installing DA2. Not sure how that could happen, but I think there might be an issue.

This isn't a widely used forum, and with so many off playing DA2, an hour for a response isn't actually slow.

That just seems to be exceptionally poor planning on the part of the game designer. I can see how the import data might make DA:2 run a bit slower because it has to check in with DA:O, but DA:O should not be having these problems. I wonder if I should report it as an official glitch and see if something can be done about it in the next patch.

What about Dragon Age: 2 could be causing this? I've searched for another explanation and there just doesn't seem to be one.

That's because you've probably drawn the wrong conclusion.  There is no direct relation between DAO and DA2... they're installed in separate directories on your computer.  DA2 gives you the option of importing a save in from DAO... but that's just what it sounds like, DA2 reads a file from your My Documents folder.  That's it.

Now, DA2 does install the latest version of Direct X 9c, I believe, and probably PhysX... but I doubt those updates are causing issues with DAO.  Still, it's a possibility, if you want to grasp at straws.

You said you had not played DAO in a long time?  No doubt something else about your system has changed.

No, my characters are walking just fine.
And no, nothing else about my computer has changed. Everything that changed, changed because of DA:2. I didn't even turn on my computer for 3 months.

Not that i know of.Ive played through Origins and im at Awakenings now with 1.04 patch applied and zero issues.Ive started a game on DA 2 and have had zero issues with that game also.I imported my origins character to awakenings and zero issues even with mods applied.
Now im trying to find this crash bug that some were talking about with Awakenings but i havent found it yet.

The biggest thing that is just confusing me to no end. Some people have problems, and others don't. I heard about people having problems that I wasn't having, and now it seems that I'm having problems no one else is having. I find it hard to believe that I'm truly the only one with this issue, but even if that's true, surely someone out there has a suggstion of what to do.
Personally, I'm at my wits end. I've tried everything short of uninstalling both games and re-downloading them.

I haven't tried Awakenings or any of the other premium content. I haven't even gone back into Dragon Age: 2 since all this crashing started. If the same problem is there, then I would say without a doubt that they are connected.
Well, they have to be connected. Even though I didn't play DA:O for almost half a year, now, I also didn't do anything with my computer. I didn't even turn the thing on for 3 months. Shocking, I know, but there have been more pressing issues, like an endless string of people jabbing needles into my arm to try and figure out what in the wide, wide world of sports is wrong with me. They just figured it out not too long ago and playing these games is about the only thing in my life right now that isn't an uphill battle... plus, I paid a total of $80 for DA:O, I'd like to play it. If nothing else, to finish getting all the achievments. I'm 9 away.

Ok try just downloading DAO and patch it up to 1.04 and play the vanilla version first.I also recommend playing offline. You dont need to play the game while connected to the internet.
To get all the achievements theres the long way which is to play with various playthroughs.Good ,the Bad and the Ugly(greedy).
The short way im not going to say what it does, but its cheap.

So, you and scrub my computer of DA:O first? And what do you mean by "vanilla," I don't do illegal mods and I already have patch 1.04. I would try playing without all the premium content, if that's what you mean, but some of it comes in the game, like Shale, and I'm not sure how to diasable it.

So you've tried updating the drivers for your graphics card?
Mods aren't illegal, although they sometimes can cause conflicts. DLC won't, er, usually. The crash bug in Awakening is a memory problem (probably) that was made better with patch 1.04 but not entirely fixed. It generally happens when there's a lot of smiting and group paralyze going on, and is worst on dual core processors. This is unlikely to be related.

Yes, I've downloaded DirectX 11, along with the latest drivers that aren't beta for my card.

Where to begin... okay... first of all, DAO does not use DX11. It may be installed on your computer if you have Windows 7 or Vista.

Second... if you want real tech support from your fellow gamers... then you should post your system specs-- hardware, OS information, and what version of the game you're playing.

Third... since you seem to be rather impatient, perhaps you could try Draconis' advice and reinstall the game. You will of course need to uninstall and then reboot first.

Finally... you can always contact EA support directly at support.ea.com.

How, exactly, do I seem impatient? I've been checking back on this for two days and wait at least 1/2 an hour before sending a bump message, usually 2 or 3 hours.
A friend recently suggested trying to uninstall DirectX 11 and reinstall DirectX10 to see if that does anything. It would mean that each time someone wants to play the other game, they would have to uninstall & reinstall.
This seems like a very flawed system, maybe something that should be reported to Bioware so they could make a 1.05 patch for DA:O so it works with 11. My only real source of confusion if this is true is, why then is it working for other people? I always knew there was a reason I stayed away from PC games for the first 20 years of my life, this is just absolute bull. Image IPB

And just in case you're wondering why it says this forum was started 12 hours ago, it's because I started a new one. The last one was apparently in the wrong place or not named correctly because it got no replies.

Apologies. Perhaps "impatient" isn't the right word. Let's say eager... and understandably so.

Given the limited information at hand, the best I can suggest is to completely uninstall DAO, reboot, and reinstall the game.

If you're computer has been dormant for several months, it might not be a bad idea to run "Windows Update" before the re-installation.

My rationale is this... if you suspect something has been corrupted with DirectX, DAO will install all the DX9c files needed to run.

Good luck!

That does make a lot of sense, but how can I be sure that all related files will be uninstalled? As I said before, I've found Dragon Age files in my Pictures folder. I'm not even sure what they were there for. And then there's all the premium content, especially things like the Darkspawn Chronicles and Leliana's Song that are completely seperate entities. If I were to start systematically hunting down every possible file that had anything to do with Dragon Age, where would you reccomend starting?
