I know how to acquire the quest, but during the quest your are to ask Variel about the assassin's location. Right now I'm doing Merrill's companion quest where we have to go to a sanctuary in Sundermount to fix the mirrior. After exiting the sanctuary you get the choice to kill the whole clan or convince them that you will punish Merrill yourself. If you'd chosen to kill the whole clan, does that include Variel? How am I supposed to find out the assassin's location then?

If you kill the clan, you kill her too. If you did kill her, you broke the quest.

If you're going to kill the clan, ask her before going up Sundermount.

Yeah I fell into this issue on my 2nd playthrough, thankfully I done a save just before heading to sundermount, so I reloaded to that point and made sure to speak to Variel before I went up the mountain.
