Simply disappointed

I'm very disappointed at the lack of balance and overall fun in this game. The combat on Normal is beyond brutal in the last fights of the game. Unreal priority given to Stun and Knockdown effects. Very poor AI all round plus sluggish controls and an overly complicated combat menu that fails to activate time and again.
I will give props to the dialogue, depth of choices in chat trees, and the attempt at bringing the player into the emotion of the game's storyline. Outside of that, DA:O falls short on every front for a "Next Gen" game. Poor graphics, a bad choice to use NWN style level creation leading to blocky level design. A lack of music. Awful combat system. Not once in my playthrough on Normal did I ever feel like the Hero of the story. DA:O's combat isn't difficult. Demon Souls is difficult. DA:O's combat system was just poorly designed and implemented. And never has my playthrough of an RPG had me scrapping for gold like a pauper more than this game. A tip to the braintrust programmers in charge of memory allocation: If a player reloads a game that is in the same area you just left, you don't have to reload every texture. Loading times in this game were inexcusable.
I leave the fanboys with this to argue over since I shant return to this thread: If DA:O is so great, why is it that one week after release, it took a $10 price drop and the number of returns is high?
I pray that the folks working on Mass Effect 2 had nothing to do with this travesty of a game.

There's a memory leak that increases the loading times gradually within a play session.
If you find load times getting out of hand (and I have, several times) save and restart the game.

Also: I find the combat system quite fun and have so far only been a little annoyed at my comrades not doing anythign but that is quite easy to fix. I just need to set them a target manually.

In regards to the topic...
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with the game, but dude... Do ya really gotta put BioWare down like that over it? Do you send ill-spirited letters to the production companies of every bad movie you ever saw? Seriously man, does anyone teach the "If you don't have anything nice to say," thing anymore?
...Note to self: Never frequent gamer forums after you become a Game Designer...

All in all though, the only problem I have with this game is that the melee templates far out-perform the magic temples. Two words... Arcane Warrior... Turn a mage into a warrior = God mode. Even though I guess Bioware warned us this would happen. But... yeah...

I personally really like the fact that money is hard earned and that you have to make decisions about what you're going to spend your money on. That's how a game like this should be, otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose of a monetary system at all.
As for blocky level design, where the hell are you getting that from? I have no idea what game you're playing, but I don't think it's Dragon Age...

All n all I've found the game very much fun so far and not been disapointed yet, it does blue screen my PC sometimes but I think the graphics card driver is more to blame for that.
But not everyone is going to like it, some people will dislike anything, I think the OP is entitled to their opinion.

"why is it that one week after release, it took a $10 price drop and the number of returns is high?" Because people are buying it without understanding that it's a stat heavy RPG? Our TV ads for the game are awful and don't really explain what the game is. I'd say many buyers may just not 'get' DA:O. Heck, even some seasoned gamers don't get it.
Yeah I didn't really understand those commercials, they actually made me quite hesitant to buy it. The commercials/trailers made it look like some simple hack'n'slash, I'm so glad I got it anyway, one of the best, if not the very best RPG I've ever played.
And to the OP, you don't think they game is difficult? I find the game very difficult, and I've played through it almost twice, not sure what it is you do to make it so "easy", and I do use tactics and pause, ALOT. I also don't see the problem with the combat itself, I like it alot, while the combat AI isn't the best I've ever seen, calling it bad is just exaggerating. And the graphics, what's wrong with those? I think the graphics are beautiful, you have to remember the game has been under development for a long time, would you rather they threw their engine in the trashcan to spend years creating a new one to get those fancy Crysis graphics?

Some people are just on the hunt to complain and **** about stuff, though - no matter how good what they're ****ing about is. Case in point, the OP.

I could -maybe- agree a teeny tiny -little- bit with the OP, but only when it comes to magic in this game. Most spells are really lackluster, even if they have really awesome visual effects. But when I can do better as a melee character than with a "wielding the powers of the universe" type, there is a bit of an issue.
All in all though, the only problem I have with this game is that the melee templates far out-perform the magic temples. Two words... Arcane Warrior... Turn a mage into a warrior = God mode. Even though I guess Bioware warned us this would happen. But... yeah...
Yup. I just soloed Gaxkang with my Arcane Warrior. Ended the fight with full health.
