I recently built a new computer and reinstalled ME 2 to play through all of the DLC (now that its all out, finally time to play it).
I bought and played the game on a different PC all the way through with no problem a year ago. I can still load those saves with no issue -- The game plays just fine.
I have a more recent save where I started a new game using my ME2 save and made it to the first mission planetside (after escaping from the space station), and a couple saves in the first station after being rebuild. When loading these, my character falls through the world and then eventually dies (I assume from hitting the bottom of the skybox?).
When I try to start a new game (Import ME2, ME1 saves or just start a new one) the intro movie plays just fine until the Normandy gets hit and it is supposed to cut to the scene where you walk through the ship when it is on fire. At this point the following happens:
The screen goes black
The fire in the background can still be heard
The menu works just fine and I can exit the game (you can't save at this point, so that part is greyed out)
It will just sit there forever (left it overnight just in case)
Obviously there is some sort of issue, but I can't figure it out -- here are the steps I've tried and my system:
Windows 7 64 bit (up to date)
Intel Core i7 970
nVidia GeForce 470 (up to date, Jan, 2011 drivers)
I've updated my sound, motherboard, network card drivers.
I've reinstalled ME2 from Steam 3 times trying new games with and without any DLC installed.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, I'm power-user and fairly tech savvy but am at a loss to figure this out. I'm willing to try anything.

Do you download a new game from steam every time or is it saved somewhere on your computer?? It sounds like a corrupted file or lost file somewhere in the install, and if you DL every time then you may have to look at virus protection or anything that would interfere with a DL. IF the game is saved by Steam somewhere on your computer and it is using the same DL as the first to reinstall then you need to delete the DL that is corrupted and try to DL a clean one.
You may also try the newest beta drivers for your vid card, they are supposed to correct some issues and be pretty good, well for a beta that is.

Did you ever find a fix for this? I'm having the same problem now. I totally uninstalled and then redownloaded from Steam, and I'm still having the problem. An hour of Googling and this is the best thread I can find, which isn't saying much.

I am having the exact same problem. The game had worked previously, and I can still load and play save games, but at the end of the opening cinematic, I get no video. I can hit <esc> and pull up menus file. I can change from fullscreen to borderless to bordered and it seems to work fine... but no picture and cannot play.

-Confirm that your system meets or exceeds the published minimum system specifications.
Confirmed.
-Provide detailed information about your PC system
Core 2 Duo E7400 cpu
Gigabyte EP45-UD3R motherboard
2x2GB GSKILL DDR2 RAM
Sapphire Radeon 4850
Windows 7 x64 utlimate edition
Creative Soubblaster Xi
Shall I discuss my disk array?
The point is: hardware had no problem in the past and is substantially different (esp: different brand vid card) from the OP who has the *exact* same symptoms.
- What version of the game are you playing: physical disc or digital download (along with which vendor)?
Current STEAM version
1. What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?
See OP. My issue is identical.
2. When did the problem start occurring?
Sometime between when I last started a new game (Feb) and now.
3. Where does your problem occur?
See OP.
4. What are the steps in replicating the problem?
Start a new game. Wait until cutscene ends.
5. Have you modified your game in any way?
No.
Confirmed.

Verify cache integrity for ME2 in Steam, most likely corrupted file which this should fix.

Cache integrity verified. Same behavior.
Can load save games. Game plays fine from save. Video is fine from save.
If I start a new char (import ME2), as soon as the cutscene ends, the screen is black. I can hear the music and fire. I can hit <esc> and the menus come up. Can change res (know it succeeds because in non-full-screen mode the window changes sized), but no pic.

I tried a new char, rather than from a ME2 save. It seems to work. I must assume there's a problem with the save file of some sort.
