It would be more in character for Velanna to have blown up the chantry and to condone random violence against templars. IMO, she should have replaced Anders.

But where would I be without Anders and Fenris tearing themselves apart for my affections?

She wasn't that interested in the mage/templar thing, was she?

Did you ignore a whole game's worth of character development or what?

She had more things to worry about.
...like her sister in the clutches of the Architect.

Well, at least her personality wouldn't have changed much.

Yeah, so I guess we missed the whole Justice/Anders relationship in Awakening and Justice's belief that Anders should get more involved in the cause of mage freedom. Velanna didn't give a flying fig about mage freedom or the Chantry. She hated humans - at least until she found out she'd been played by the darkspawn. Blowing up the Chantry would decidedly not be in character for her - there would be no point, no motivation.

Yeah, Velanna was definitely the murderous type at the beginning of Awakening, but not at the end. But, she still didn't really give a **** about mages or templars. The only reason she would care about the circle is because they would imprison elves, but even then, they would be city elves, and probably not dalish. She doesn' seem to think much of city elves or any elf who doesn't embrace their dalish heritage.
Still, I would love to see Velanna return!

Now that that's been said...personally I didn't really like Velanna, but that's just me! : /

I think Bioware Should bring Velanna back as a DLC Character as a Squad mate and Love Intrest for Male Hawke like Seb was for Female Hawkes make it happen Bioware

It's not gonna be easy to have Velanna have much of a major role due to how easy it was to kill her off.
Anders didn't die in your sight, but Velanna did.

Bleh. The only thing I liked about her was that she is also Princess Azula. Buwhaha.

Justice was the only character in Awakening I disliked more than Velana... I could get behind the idea of shoving a sword through a Velana/Justice Abomination.

Velanna and Isabela as party members would be amusing. Could result in some kind of catfight.

Can you imagine Velanna patiently healing human refugees for years?

The point of using Anders was that he changed. He wouldn't have been as effective with Velanna for a couple of reasons:
Velanna already hated humans. I don't know if she said anything negative about the Chantry in particular, but considering they're responsible for the exalted marches against her people, I'm thinking she's not too fond of them. It wouldn't have been OOC for her to blow up the Chantry without any prompt from Justice.
Anders, on the other hand, seemed to have no problem with Andraste and religion in general. He just didn't condone the templars' behavior and he wanted his freedom. He was also more likeable on the whole, cracking jokes, being easy-going, etc. A major theme in Dragon Age II was watching his deterioration and descent from this likeable, charming mage to a freedom-fighter/terrorist who cares more about his cause than himself or the people around him. It was heartbreaking, really.
Blowing up the Chantry was a big, important act in the game. I think for a lot of people, myself included, it had overtones of recent terrorist acts in the real world. It's very hard to make a character who does something like that sympathetic or understandable. But I really feel like Anders is both. I might not agree with his methods, but I understand why he did what he did. And I know where he came from and what he was like before the possession, so I don't know if he's fully responsible. It doesn't change that he did it, though, which makes the choice of whether or not to kill him a tough one.
Do you hold him fully responsible for his actions knowing he probably wouldn't have done this without Justice (admittedly this is somewhat meta-knowledge, but I just imagine my Hawke had a long conversation with Nate about Anders' personality before the possession)? If Velanna were to replace Anders, I think the question has an easy answer. I could see her doing something like this regardless of possession, and I think more people would find it easier to kill her. But with Anders the issue is more complicated, muddled.
DA2's not supposed to be a game about easy answers. It's a game of difficult choices, with people on all sides doing bad things, and where sometimes, no matter your intentions or actions, you lose. Throwing in a likeable character who loses what he used to be to a righteous cause, who does some terrible things in the name of what he believes to be a greater good, that's par for the course. And I wouldn't have it any other way. Else, what would we debate here on the forums?

Velanna should have replaced Anders?
Because she was already angry and obssessive, so having a corrupted Justice spirit living inside her would have changed her personality little?

Velanna wouldn't have made any sense in that role.
She sees herself as Dalish first and a mage second. She doesn't care a fig about mages' rights among the shemlen. If she was going to fight for anyone's rights, it would be the Dalish.

Velanna doesn't even care about mages and templars, that wouldn't even make sense to shift roles like that
