Like....were you going to investigate the ship with your old crew and old normandy on a distress call relayed from Hackett, only to have the ship come to life and blow you up? That would have been amazingly exciting. Programming 6 potential squadmates and then accounting for math surrounding that is probably why something like that would have taken forever. Maybe it was supposed to be that DLC that we never got for ME1?
It would have been an amazing opening. Tricking the player by giving them the impression it's an updated version of the old game. Kicking things off with mystery, intrigue, and something they've never seen before in mass effect. Then blam everything goes horribly wrong and shepard is defeated. It would have been more interesting and probably demo'd well in the long run. The opening we have is cool but it's incredibly abrupt and doesn't really draw you in. It just kinda feels like an action movie and not a videogame. It would have left the middle of the game with alot of optional content but that might not have been a bad thing. (we can even still fit the comic in there as well.)
I think the Collector ship mission probably would have fit more there. Like it's kind of an akward part of the game where you stop doing a thing to go investigate something to accomplish nothing and then go back to doing your thing. I would love to be able to talk to someone from Bioware and get the inside scoop on what sorts of changes the game went through as it went along.
To reitterate, I'm wondering if this is what the opening might have been planned at some early stage of development. Shepard is out in alliance space, gets a call from hackett to investigate a mysterious ship floating out in the terminus system. You talk to your crew aboard the ship for a little dialogue referencing what may or may not have happened in the previous game. If you are doing an ME2 new game ash/kaiden would be omitted from this scene as well as Wrex, you would still get to make those decisions in the comic later in the prologue, but you'd be forced to use Garrus and Tali on the Collector ship without a choice.
So basically I'm talking about an opening invoking of ME1's but with a different objective and theme. You have the opening as normal but instead of just having the ship pop up out of nowhere it's just sort of floating arround and is the reason you're out in this section of space and so on. You have a segment where you get to run arround on the bridge and talk to people, get a mission briefing, and then pick your crew and head out. (for effect the menu should have been the ME1 blue during the prologue) The collector ship would have just been an investigation, except it goes badly, you try to escape but it starts firing on you. In the middle of the game you have an experience almost similar to the beginning of the game but you get away this time.
This probably would have made the opening stronger and also the middle of the game maybe flowed better too. Except it would have been expensive to make and probably not worth it so just have it show up out of thin air and zap an untraceable stealth ship to death.
