I bought Mass Effect about half a year or year ago through EA Value Games (on the budget shelf).  Turns out I couldn't really play it back then, my old computer was a little too old.

I've gotten a new machine and I've just installed it.  Now I am trying to play it and it is crashing when it attempts to go to the Config screen (since this is my first time playing it on this new machine it wants to do the config before allowing me to play).

Here are some of the details under the error window that pops up:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:    BEX
  Application Name:    MassEffectConfig.exe
  Application Version:    1.2.0.13
  Application Timestamp:    481b677e
  Fault Module Name:    MassEffectConfig.exe
  Fault Module Version:    1.2.0.13
  Fault Module Timestamp:    481b677e
  Exception Offset:    000ad694
  Exception Code:    c000000d
  Exception Data:    00000000
  OS Version:    6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.2
  Locale ID:    7177
  Additional Information 1:    ff9e

My system specs are as follows:

OS:  Windows 7 Home 64bit
Display Card:  Nvidia GeForce GTS 450
RAM:  Kingston DDR3 2GB 1333FSB CL9 x2 (4 gig total)
HDD:  500 gig Seagate
Motherboard:  Intel H67 Bearup Lake LGA1155
Processor:  Intel Core I5 3.1 Ghz LGA1155 6

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT:  I just noticed that there was a similar thread near the bottom of the page that didn't really go anywhere.  Hopefully this one does, but, looking at the responses the other person got I am not going to get my hopes up so I'll pass this onto the bigwigs right now.

EDIT EDIT:  This is what EA has to say on the matter:

If you find the Mass Effect configuration utility stops working
and are running the game on Windows Vista, you may need to run
the launcher in administrator mode. To do this:

  • Right-click the game's desktop shortcut icon and choose Properties.
  • In the Properties Panel, click the Compatibility
    tab.
  • In the Privilege level section place a check in the
Run this Program as an Administrator checkbox.
  • Click Apply to save your changes.
There is also a known issue with systems that have an AMD
Quad Core Processor (Phenom)
. This is being addressed by the
Bioware team in a future game update. In the meantime you can bypass the
launcher to start the game. Browse to (default) C:\\Program
Files\\Mass Effect\\Binaries
and double-click the Masseffect.exe.
file to start the game.

I am going to give this a shot and report back on my findings.  If it
works then hopefully this will prevent any future posts on the matter.
Makes me wonder though why this wasn't brought up in the thread started
by SeekingSoul.

EDIT EDIT EDIT:  Okay, so that didn't work at all :(  Going to have to go with running the direct executable from the binaries folder.  *sigh*  Evidently, this is not just an issue with some AMD quad cores, but Intel quad cores as well.  I hope Bioware picks this up in their next patch.

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT:  Yay, not even the direct exe works, crashes as well.  *puts game back on shelf*  This sucks.

EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT:  Okay I am in a que right now to live chat with an EA techie.  I will report back on my findings.

Well I get to hang my head in shame and be poked to death by everyone else - I got it working and it was all thanks to ...... the patch.

There's a lesson here. Always ALWAYS patch your game with the latest patch before attempting to play. It can save you a lot of headaches.

Indeed Moondoggie. I bought the budget re-release of ME1 and wrongly assumed that it would be pre-patched like some GotY editions sometimes are.
