After almost 110 hours, I reached Act 3 with my first playthrough, Rogue, Nightmare.

Instead of forging ahead to complete the game, I recently started a new playthrough (as a mage, also NM) for testing purposes and I've found that I'm flying through some battles that took me many reloads to beat the first time around. (For example, just to get past the demo area in Nightmare, it took me about 10 hours the first time. The second time, only about 2-3 hours.)

In fact, so far in Act 1, I have been selling off every healing potion for gold and I don't have any mages with healing spells in the party. I'm considering attempting to continue through the entire game without using healing potions, healing spells or revive, to maintain the same level of tactical challenge I experienced during the first playthrough. (Also, it will be fun to play with three offensive mages and one 2H tank.)

Has anyone else found Nightmare to be significantly easier the second time around? Are you altering your playstyle to keep the same level of balance?

That's the byproduct of meta-gaming and experience. Things also become easier if you've watched someone else play.

My first game was on hard and I kind of bulldogged my way through it.  Now I'm playing through on nightmare and it is a much smoother and easier gaming experience.

Like you I'm not using a healer and really do not use a lot of healing potions.

My first nightmare run was 2H warrior, which was hard until I realised that vanguard tree is amazing. Then it became easy.

Now on blood mage run, its.... harder. But I think that is a symptom of 2H warrior being an amazing class more anything. Still, playing it on NM before helps because you are aware of which areas are impossible before a certain level, new npc target priorities and that rogues steal potions.

Challenges produce skill perfection. That's the normal curve of learning- as the difficulty is higher so is the level of skill the player develops.
You set certain barriers that you can't pass at the first time and you need to adopt or learn a certain skill in order to pass. The higher it is the better you need to be in order to pass the challenge. There's no better way of learning than bashing your head against that wall again and again. This affects your mind-set as well- things that otherwise would look like annoyances become the norm and it all depends on what you can do to deal with them.

That's why I always play games on highest difficulty; plus the games take much longer to beat.

You should've seen me in Batman: Arkham Asylum- the fight mechanics are very simple but it took some time to understand how to properly play them. It took me about 40 minutes to finish the very first fight of the game.

I'm having a blast this time around with three offensive mages, using Fenris as 2H tank. Every time he staggers enemies, I have three different mages who can cast upgraded Chain Lightning.

When I come across a locked chest, I make a note of it and come back with Varric after the area is cleared.

Nearly every battle that was a PITA the first time is - not exactly a breeze, but significantly easier. Trying to go through the entire game without getting any Revive spells or Myhral's potions.
