Making it explicit that Anders somehow finagled the recipe for his explosives out of the Qunari. And then magically enhanced it with lyrium from the idol--who says Bartrand didn't break it into more pieces? Given the ingredients he has you go search for (sela petrae? Drakestone? Sounds like saltpeter and sulfur to me) especially given that saltpeter IS most easily extracted from urine, and given where he sends you to FIND the stuff, this would have TOTALLY made sense. The potential was THERE and given how much to-do there is in Acts I and II about the black powder, it would have beautifully tied the entire game together, with Idol + Qunari Presence + Mage v. Templar adding up to Big Damn Red Laser Boom.
It really felt, to me, like the overall plot was trying to go this way but for some reason it wasn't done. You really would only have had to add a few lines of dialog, too.
It would have made it even scarier if, at the end, there'd been a line along the lines of "great, now we have gunpowder in Thedas. Everything is going to change."
