I have this problem with all games of this nature, I only enjoy one class and it's warrior with sword and shield. You're always supposed to be a hero and I personally just can't imagine a hero that is anything but a sword and shield wielding, heavy armour wearing goody two shoes knight type of character. I do try to play as other characters and they can be fun for short bursts, but I always come back to warrior with sword and shield, always, it's just what I enjoy the most.

It's never much of a problem, but in this game it brings up a few problems for me. The first one was that Alistair is also a tank and since he's such a lovable character it was hard to imagine not taking him along in the main party. I've got over that now, but it took a long time. The other problem is that Wynne bugs me. Her character is boring. She's old, she never says anything funny or amusing. Morrigan, on the other hand, is wonderful, even though she's kind of an evil character and disagrees with all the nice things I do for people, you can keep her sweet and still have her like you with gifts and regular talking in camp.

I could go on and on about my likes and dislikes, but it boils down to this... Can I make Morrigan in to a healer/DPS hybrid and not have to reload 10 times per battle? I figure that with 2 other DPS in my party, like Sten and Leliana (I love her too, she has to come), and some utility spells from Morrigan like cone of cold and a whole lot of stuns and heals, it might just work.

Anybody else ever done it and can relay their experiences? Danke.

Morrigan is not evil, as the story goes you'll see she can be very protective of those who earn her trust (an attribute which would be foreign to a truly "evil" character) but she's very selfish (vain, arrogant, etc).

Morrigan is actually best used as a healer/DPS character. She outdamages Wynne, and turning her into healer/support is as simple as getting her Heal, Group Heal (yes, take Spirit Healer) and Force Field (so she can nuke with impunity - you really wouldn't want to kill your own tanker).
A lot of people believe that Wynne is a superior offensive caster to Morrigan. At face value she is - she does more damage per spell but in the end what determines a mage's damage potential in DA:O is the number of offensive spells you can cast. Getting high damage off one or two spells every 8 second or so CD is nice, but a true nuker should be casting offensive spells unceasingly, repeatedly (mana-willing, and with a few support spells thrown in every now and then).
As long as your tanker can keep mobs off her Morrigan should have no problem DPSing down everything using Fireball + the cone spells (Flame Blast, Shock and Cone of Cold). She also has her Shapeshifter forms, making her useful against humanoid bosses like Branka (Overwhelm). Do invest your points purely in magic. Morrigan starts with points in the Telekinesis and Cold lines, so she's well on her way to being a DPS/healer from the onset. The only way Wynne can catch up is if you use mods to reset her spell selection.
As long as you don't intend on doing some of the more difficult quests before Morrigan hits Group Heal (the last Elven/Dwarf treaty battle, dragon fights, the optional dwarven arena) then you should be alright. Note that difficult early battles (the wolf encounter, some of the chantry quests) are hellish no matter who you have in your party.

A lot of what you've both said rings true about Wynne, particularly about her being boring.... /snore... Anyway, If one is going to choose Morrigan, what staff is best suited to her being a hybrid? Is it the Staff of the Magister Lords? Wintersbreath? Winter's Breath? (Yeah, wtf is up with there being two almost identical staves, name and all!? lol) Possession Robes or Reaper's Vestment?

The Staff of the Magister Lords, though Winter's Breath is fine. I doubt you'll want to spend all your gold on Morrigan.

As a general rule use a set which boosts either your defense OR your dodge. Since I doubt you'll give Morrigan stuff like the Spellward (critical to each ~40% dodge) focus on giving her +defense stuff (Magus War Boots, Buckle of the Winds, etc). A live mage is more useful than a dead one, and the piddling amount of +damage you get from anything except your gloves/staff is not worth sacrificing survivability for. With Arcane Armor and Rock Armor a Morrigan in full +defense set should be resilient enough to tank even a Revenant. She'll still be paper against mobs with grab/overwhelm-type skills and magic though, that's why you actually need a warrior.

Well, I'm not one who is so virtuous as to not use "glitches" that are in the game, so money isn't really an issue. I was lucky and for some reason, after I bought all the nice shiny items from Bodahn, came back a few quests later and he had a second set of shiny items! (The Veshaille, Spellward, GM Runes) Gloves look mostly to be in the +dmg variety, so is it really up to what dmg type you choose to spec her in?

I've done the 3 DLCs (Golem, Warden's Keep, RTO) so the rest of my party is sufficiently "pimped" (I don't even think Wynne heals Alistair in his Cailan's Armour set with its health regen bonus lol).

Well met, fellow powergamer. Bodahn replenishes his stock three times, he will restock following your first meeting after Lothering. Perfect for buying spell/skill tomes twice.

The Staff of the Magister Lord is simply more well-rounded. Gloves do only boost damage, and fire/cold is your best bet. Fire is slightly better since two of your four core spells are from the fire tree (Fireball, Flame Blast) and Fire spells are more affected by spellpower than the other spell lines. +cold damage gloves becomes a decent alternative once you get Morrigan's special robe.

You need to take Fireball, Flame Blast, Shock and Cone of Cold if you plan on being a true DPSer since you can cast these spells repeatedly (if you cast one after the other you have a 2 or so second cooldown before you can cast them all all over again, perfect for squeezing in a support spell like Force Field or Group Heal). If all you do is choose a particular spell line and cast one or two damage spells then you're looking at a good Wynne build instead of a Morrigan one.
In DA:O spellpower works in such a way that only a small fraction of it is actually ever used for most spells. This means quantity > quality, spell damage-wise - the only thing you should be worried about is the possibility of you killing your own teammates. Spell cooldown also limits your overall DPS in the long run, so though someone like Wynne can pull off a spectacular amount of damage with 1 or 2 spells a Morrigan spamming Fireball + the cone spells over and over again will ultimately outdamage her. The only issue is Mana.

I agree 100% with the Morrigan build, give her spirit healing and a bunch of DPS spells and she is extremely powerful. Morrigan also has a huge advantage in skill points if you like to micromanage your mages(like I do) in that Wynne has wasted skill points in tactics. But Wynne does have a huge advantage over Morrigan and that is that she is she starts with spirit healing instead of shapeshifting. Therefore, if you don't care about feeling dirty and making Wynne a complete hypocrite then you can give Wynne the spirit healing-blood magic combo. That combo is the best pure magic build in the game. She can heal everyone else, cast most of her spells with life and heal herself with blood sacrifice. Also she'll have the best AoE spell in the game(blood wound) and another great spell blood control that is even better when it is resisted. Give her cone of cold and the crushing prison line(for crushing prison, force field and mind blast) and she's set. She already has stone fist for the shatter combo. Of course the best spirit healer-blood mage build is a main character build.

Wynne also has Vessel of the Sprit, which comes in handy if she runs low on mana.

My mage wardens are usually the only mage in the party and do everything from healing, crowd control and damage. It certainly can be done, though it's nice to have my warden be the mage when it comes to using spells like cone of cold and fireball, which can damage the party. I wouldn't want my companion mages to have any damaging spells in their tactics that aren't the single target type, because they're just as likely to hit their own companions with them as the opposition.
