I decided to let the mages live and told the templars not to go into the cave. They attacked and the only way for me to win the battle was to run away and take them out a few at a time. Then I think Thrask either got killed or went up and disappeared and the quest can't be completed.

So I guess I'll have to replaying this until Thrask survives or go against my role-playing choice and pick another dialog option so the templars don't attack. >:-(

It appears Thrask weren't as wimpy as I first feared. Only one replay. :-)
