I still understand what was the point of changing the look of the Darkspawn.
Why? And no, I'm not starting another thread like "Oh look, they look like Skeletor's cousins, they suck!", but their new appearance doesn't change anything story-wise, and also...there's nothing different about them, as they follow the same attack patterns used in DA:O.
DA2 is a mixed bag, speaking of art direction. The demons, like the Pride Demon, Desire Demon, and so on...look exactly the same. The abominations and dragons included.
The elves...well, they did suffer a change, in my humble opinion, for the worse...as they don't look like elves, more like aliens with big eyes, extremely thin bodies, long necks and weird faces.
I know the intention was to avoid making them look like "Humans with pointy ears"...but they could have used a little more work.

So, why change some things and then leave the other stuff just the way it was before?
Lack of time? Lack of resources? I know my opinion is just that...an opinion, but I seriously think that if you're going to change the art direction, then everything should change, and not just a couple of things.
Besides...the excessive recycling ends killing the end result, so...

What do you think about it?

I'm told it was to make them more closely resemble their description in the Calling novel.
Don't know if that's true or not, or if they're now accurate to that description, unless the book really said  "the Hurlock appeared... the face of Skeletor in chainmail atop a chubby, pasty body.. and it moved towards our heroes like a minor baddie from Power Rangers."

no idea.. Seems some things were changed for the sake of change.

Elves now look like small Na'vi

And Hurloc Bolters make me have to pause the game so I can laugh at the dumb design.

That's exactly how it's described. Are you sure you didn't read the book?

From what I've heard it's mostly because they looked too much like your Generic-Fantasy-Orc-Horde-Lookalike. Them looking for a art style they can call their own is probably another factor in that.

The Darkspawn from DAO always reminded me of the Uruk-hai from Lord of the Rings. They seemed too generic. Their appearance in DA2 still isn't great, but at least it is more distinctive. The changes made to the Elves was unnerving at first but I got used to it.

The devs probably felt that DAO looked too generic, so they tried to make the game seem more unique. To be honest, the art styles are similar enough that I don't mind.

Nope, it's on my to-do list.
.. actually I don't have a to-do list, making a to-do list is also on my to-do list.

Yes.

I hardly call Skeletor more distinctive.
Even if you're not aware of a camp character in an 80's macho cartoon, they also just look like generic undead. I'll take LotR orcs over that.

Probably. But with all the recycling and hordes of generic enemies they certainly failed to succeed.

At least in DAO they looked intimidating. Now they look ridiculous, and prance around like clowns.

You need to take a closer look. They don't look like Skeletor at all. They have pale skin, with a jutting forward jaw, so it looks as if they have no lips. They look like they are living, but simultaneously appearing soulless. Their armor seems thrown together with little regard for their safety. As I said - I don't think they're great, but they are an improvement over the Darkspawn from DAO.

I agree. The recycled enemy models makes the enemies seem far too generic - but that's a problem that many RPGs face. This problem has existed in all of the big RPGs of the past 5 years: Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3 + F3 New Vegas, Oblivion, etc. With that said, the recycled environments do greatly hurt the game.

You know, I was thinking about that, and it hit me: "beauty in the eye of the beholder"! maybe the elves looks beautiful to a human and other elves but not in the eyes of a sexy dwarf :P

Varric describe them that way isn't?

I'm fine with the look, but the running animation with the arm swinging, seriously? Did bioware do an old Power Rangers game and just reused the running animation? Just a generic people running animation would of been better.

They did look too much like something about of Lord of the Rings originally. I didn't have as much of a problem with them this go around though the pastey white could have been better for their skin. If they made them run like ghouls in WoW, I'd probably be in love with them. Just cause that is funny as hell to see. Especially if a lot of run at once.

I like the new elves much better. The darkspawn though do look bad. Just have just kept the old models and update the textures on them so it doesn't look so lowres.

yeah, not a big fan of the new Darkspawn. the elves though, I got mixed feelings on them, some look absolutely horrible, but I think some of them look pretty good too.

Huh, I think their big eyes looks cute, but then again I grew up watching too much anime, so I'm used to characters with gigantic eyes.

Realistic art style and then... BAM! CHIBI ANIMATION!!  I am half-expecting giant sweat-drops to appear in the next Dragon Age :P

Naw, I like the change.  I believe elves should feel like a different race.  They were far too human before.

I'm fairly sure the Darkspawn use the same animations from DA:O. The problem is, everything in DA:O ran in slow motion, so animations that looked creepy in DA:O, just end up looking clownish at DA2's speed. You get the same issue with skeletons when they run, same animation, but quicker pace and you're just left shaking your head because of how stupid it looks.

I really like the new elves but can't stand the new darkspawn. They don't look scary anymore.. just ridiculous.

I'm not "Ewww Darkspawn" anymore, instead I always want to call for Battle Cat to crush them.

Would be interesting to see how Brood Mother, Genlocks and Shrieks look now. Or are they gone after the art change?

The more that I think about it. The real flaw is the white skin. It's like they're missing a texture. Personally I didn't fixate on them. But many players are completely fixated on some very small parts of the game.
